Skye Reach Scottish Second Round - Taynuilt 1 Skye Camanachd 3 - UPDATED! | |
06 May 2013 Skye Camanachd are through to the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup second round after their 3-1 win over Taynuilt on Saturday 4 May 2013. The sides’ last meeting was at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on 15 May 2010 when an under-strength Taynuilt side went down 9-1 to Skye in a Balliemore Cup tie. The Skye scorers that day were Kenny Campbell (3), Iain Morrison (3), Allan MacKinnon, Iain Nicolson and Willie MacRae. It took a late fight-back before Skye eventually overcame Strathglass 4-3 in Marine Harvest North Division 1 the previous weekend and manager Willie MacRae had decisions to make; particularly who should start in attack. Iain Murray and Steven Morrison started with Neil MacVicar beginning the game at full back. Defender Andrew Banks came into the squad and he took up a place on the bench. Taynuilt are currently bottom of Marine Harvest South Division 1. However they did make a good start to the season, drawing with current leaders Glasgow Mid Argyll and beating Oban Celtic. They were without the player / manager Willie Gillies who was in the process of serving a two match ban. Skye’s long journey south was interrupted because of a road accident between Spean Bridge and Fort William and this led to a delay in the throw up time. Skye played with the wind at their backs in the first half and they took the lead after 12 minutes thanks to an 18 yard Iain Murray snapshot. The Islanders doubled their advantage on 34 minutes when Steven Morrison dribbled into the goal area before pushing the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. The wind which aided Skye in the first half seemed to calm down ahead of the start of the second period. The goal of the match came on 52 minutes when a flowing move from the middle of the park saw Aonghas MacDonald, Steven Morrison and Kenny Campbell link up well before Kenny Campbell produced a good finish from the edge of the D to make it 3-0. Taynuilt didn’t really pressure the Skye goal for any sustained period throughout the game but they did pull a goal back on 62 minutes when referee Dunkie Kerr penalised Skye keeper Michael Nicolson for a kick. Steven Parr stepped up to net from the spot to make it 3-1. Allan MacKinnon was probably the pick of the Skye players whilst Iain Murray was a steady influence and Steven Morrison added bite to the attack. So Skye are through to Monday’s Camanachd Cup second round draw where they will be hoping for a home tie.
