20 June 2016 Skye Camanachd U17 player John Gillies has been named in the Scotland U17 squad which travels to Ireland and take part in a playing tour against hurling counterparts this summer. Gillies has established himself in the Skye Camanachd first team this season and he was awarded the Sandy MacKay Medal as man of the match in Skye Camanachd U17’s recent RBS MacTavish Juvenile Cup success over Fort William U17. He will still be eligible for selection for the 2017 Scotland U17 squad. The squad travel to Dublin on Sunday 24 July 2016 and they will play Kilkenny U17 the following day before taking on Dublin U17 on Tuesday 26 July 2016. The squad returns to Scotland the following day. This annual tour has been taking place for over 20 years and it gives the elite shinty players, many of whom attended the previous year’s National Development Camp, the first chance to represent their country in the Shinty / Hurling fixture.

Camanachd Association Youth Director Willie MacDonald said, “The squad, and the tour itself, is an integral part of shinty’s player pathway; it is the last opportunity for players to test themselves before preparing to step up to U21 and senior level. This year’s squad is made up of some highly skillful players, many of whom already hold spots in their own club’s first team. I am in no doubt that we will see some excellent displays of shinty/hurling skill.” |
