Skye Camanachd Ladies 8 Lochaber Ladies 0 | |
06 May 2019 Skye Camanachd Ladies were 8-0 winner in their Mowi National Division meeting with Lochaber Ladies at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 4 May 2019. This fixture brought together the league’s top two teams. Skye went into the game as leaders but only ahead of Lochaber and Badenoch on goal difference with the Islanders having played a game more. Lochaber had a number of absentees for this noon throw up including Mairi Duncan and Missy Cameron. Indeed they were eight players short from the squad that played in the Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup semi-finals the previous year. Skye opened playing towards the Skeabost end of the ground and they took the initiative from the throw up. Skye took an early lead when Lochaber keeper Aeleen Campbell uncharacteristically mis-hit a goal hit straight to Skye’s Sarah Corrigall, who was in front of goal. Corrigall took a touch before slotting the ball low into the net to make it 1-0. Keeper Campbell redeemed herself soon after when she made a stunning save with her club, turning a ferocious Lorna MacRae shot away for a corner on the Skye right. When a low cross from Sarah Corrigall on the right was missed by the Lochaber defence, Lorna MacRae blasted the ball low into the net to double Skye’s lead with 13 minutes gone. Sarah Corrigall got her second and Skye’s third midway through the half when she weaved in from the left and, holding her club with one hand, she skilfully stroked the ball low into the net from close range. The action was almost all one-way towards the Lochaber goal and another firm strike from Lorna MacRae made it 4-0. When Skye keeper Sarah-Jane Ferguson was called into action, she made a good stop; getting her body behind a strike from the right. There was a touch of fortune around Skye’s fifth goal. Jenna Beaton played the ball into the danger area, low from wide on the right, and the ball took a bobble, deceiving the keeper and ended up in the net. Skye boss Robbie Gordon immediately brought Emma Gordon on for Molly MacKinnon. Skye were playing some really nice shinty, especially between midfield and attack where their one-touch play was really difficult to defend against. And the hosts scored a special sixth goal just before the break. A great ball from Jenna Beaton on the right was brilliantly dummied by Sarah Corrigall, catching out the Lochaber defence, and Lorna MacRae ran in behind her to slam the ball low into the net and complete her hat-trick. Skye brought Abby MacLean on for Jenna Beaton just 10 minutes into the second half. Lochaber manager Martin Stewart had regrouped his players at the break and they frustrated Skye, who had pressure but didn’t really work the keeper for the first 25 minutes of the second half. However, with 15 minutes to go, substitute Abby MacLean turned home a rebound to make it 7-0. Sarah Corrigall completed her hat-trick with a turn and shot and although the keeper got a stick to the ball, she couldn’t keep it out. The 8-0 win keeps Skye top of the table.
