Skye Ladies Edged Out On National League Debut - Skye Camanachd Ladies 1 Badenoch & Strathspey Ladies 2 | |
04 March 2014 Skye Camanachd Ladies were edged out 2-1 by Badenoch & Strathspey Ladies in their opening Marine Harvest National Division 1 match at the Portree High School All-Weather pitch on Saturday 1 March 2014. This was always going to be a tough challenge for the Skye Ladies. Although they won the Marine Harvest North Division 2 title last season, this was certainly a step up against the current Valerie Fraser Cup holders. Skye Camanachd Ladies Head Coach Sarah Corrigall was without the services of 2013 National Marine Harvest North Division 2 Player of the Year Helen Lamond for this 12 noon throw up. Badenoch were without Scotland international Jane Nicol who retired at the end of last season and they gave a debut to youngster Rachel Borthwick. Badenoch & Strathspey started well and Kirsty Deans finished off a good move by slotting a firm strike past Skye keeper Sarah Corrigall to put her side 1-0 in front. Skye brought Lorna MacRae into midfield and this helped the Islanders control the middle of the park and it was Lorna MacRae who scored a first half equaliser when she fired home from a narrow angle. Both teams had chances to win the game before pacey Badenoch & Strathspey youngster Rachael Borthwick, who had caused the Skye defence problems all afternoon, ran in on goal and blasted the ball high into the net for what proved to be the winning goal. Skye still had a couple of opportunities to draw level but they found Badenoch & Strathspey and Scotland keeper Elizabeth McGregor to be in fine form so the visitors took the points. In the other Marine Harvest National Division 1 match to go ahead, Aberdour Ladies were surprise 2-1 winners over reigning national champions Glasgow Mid Argyll Ladies at Silver Sands on Sunday 2 March 2014. Lisa Norman had given GMA the lead only for Katie Booth to level before the break. Aberdour’s Gillian Brown delighted the home support by scoring what proved to be the winner in the second half. Next up for the Skye Camanachd Ladies is a journey south to play Glasgow Mid Argyll at Peterson Park, Yoker on Saturday 15 March 2014. Throw up is at 1pm.
