Skye Camanachd 4 Lochcarron 2 | |
31 May 2014 Skye Camanachd recorded their second league win of the season when they beat Lochcarron 4-2 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 derby at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 24 May 2014. David Grant returned to first team duty but co-managers Angie MacDonald and John Angus MacInnes recalled Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod and Chris Campbell into the 16 man squad. Lochcarron had a few absentees including Michael MacMillan and captain Peter MacKenzie took his place in goal despite having a hand injury. Gregor Cushnie hit the side-netting from an early David Bauermeister corner on the left whilst at the other end, an Angie MacDonald shot was saved with his feet by Peter MacKenzie. Gregor Cushnie cut in from the right when marker Andrew Banks slipped but his shot went across goal without troubling home keeper Iain MacLeod. Lochcarron’s Daniel MacRae received the game’s first yellow card from his name-sake, referee Daniel MacRae. Iain MacLeod made a superb save above his head from a Kenny Cushnie shot following a Nick Dalgety shy. David MacCuish played in the resultant corner on the left and Gregor Cushnie, who has been Lochcarron’s main goal threat this season, turned and shot low into the net to give the visitors a 23 minutes lead. Lochcarron boss Ross Brown made the game’s first change when David Cameron replaced Sean MacCuish. Gregor Cushnie slipped a nice pass to David Bauermeister but Iain MacLeod came off his line to block the ball with his foot. Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod made space for himself on 32 minutes before shooting over as Skye fought back. Skye made their first changes as both wing forwards - Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod Iain MacLellan – were replaced by John Gillies and Daniel Morrison. John Gillies played a nice ball in to Angie MacDonald who turned and shot but his effort brushed the wrong side of the post on 38 minutes. John Gillies fired in a cracking shot moments later which Peter MacKenzie bravely turned away for a corner with his injured hand. The visitors broke forward and a Kenny Cushnie shot flashed across goal after he was played in by his father Gregor Cushnie. Sean MacCuish returned to the action at the start of the second half at the expense of David Bauermeister. Skye created the first chance of the second half when Angie MacDonald nipped in to win a ball which seemed to be going out of play ahead of keeper MacKenzie and he cut the ball across goal. However Douglas MacKenzie cleared the danger before Daniel Morrison could get to the ball. Skye made a positional change with wing centre Thomas Wilson and wing forward Daniel Morrison swapping positions. Skye levelled on 55 minutes when John Angus MacInnes battled to win possession and his shot seemed to go into the net off keeper Peter MacKenzie’s foot. Thomas Wilson came off for Skye and Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod made a reappearance in attack. Gregor Cushnie injured his leg when he fell awkwardly on 64 minutes and he left the field to be replaced by player / manager Ross Brown at full forward. Arran Matheson came on in attack for Lochcarron as they looked to get back in front. The changes continued and Daniel MacRae was withdrawn with Gregor Cushnie coming back on up front and Kenny Cushnie dropping back to full centre. Gregor Cushnie wasn’t able to connect as he would have liked on 74 minutes and a half-chance was passed up. John Gillies beat his marker on the right and bore in on goal and his effort was deflected wide. However Skye went in front from the resultant corner from Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod when Iain MacLellan swept the ball home to make it 2-1 with 75 minutes played. Skye keeper Iain Macleod made a fantastic save when he palmed away an Arran Matheson shot from distance which was dipping in on goal. Skye did well to defend a Lochcarron free-hit from a dangerous area and Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod held off Gregor Cushnie to let the ball run out of play. Skye extended their lead on 79 minutes when Lochcarron were unable to clear another Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod corner on the right. David MacInnes played the ball back into the goal area and Iain MacLellan slotted home his second goal of the afternoon to make it 3-1. Angie MacDonald came off and Kyle Pirie came on at wing forward with John Angus MacInnes going to full forward. With 5 minutes remaining, Lochcarron reduced the deficit when Gregor Cushnie took down a free-hit and rifled the ball home with a great shot which gave Iain MacLeod no chance and made it 3-2. Ross Brown caused panic in the Skye defence when he held off a couple of challenges to cut in from the right but he ran the ball just out of play. There was a late booking for Magnus Burd for a challenge on Arran Matheson who was also yellow-carded for his reaction. However Skye substitute Kyle Pirie rounded off the win with a goal a minute from time to make it 4-2. Iain MacLellan’s path to goal was blocked by Alan MacKay but Pirie fought hard to win possession and he drove the ball low into the net for a clinching fourth goal. Defenders shone for both teams with Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod turning in a good performance for Skye whilst Douglas MacKenzie impressed with his no-nonsense style for Lochcarron. The introduction of John Gillies added energy to the Skye attack and Magnus Burd was competitive as ever. Next up for Skye is a Strathdearn Cup first round tie against Marine Harvest North Division 3 side Inverness at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.
