Skye Camanachd 4 Lochcarron 1 | |
24 October 2022 The Skye Camanachd seconds had to work hard to eventually see off Lochcarron 4-1 in their Mowi North Division 1 match at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. on Saturday 22 October 2022. Skye manager Ally MacDonald was able to include Ross Gordon, Iain MacLellan, Jamie Gillies and Sam Macphee for this 1pm throw up and whilst Lochcarron travelled with a 15-man squad, they were missing the influential Dougie MacKenzie, Kenny Cushnie and Sean MacCuish. Skye started well and Iain MacLellan burst forward from midfield to send a shot wide following a Skye corner on the right whilst good play from Ian MacPherson set up Ross Gordon but he also fired wide. The Skye attacks continued and Archie Millar’s good ball from deep picked out Ross Gordon but he sent his effort by the far post. Skye were forced into a reshuffle when David MacInnes went off with a back injury. Which included Jamie Gillies dropping back to full back. Despite’s Skye’s early pressure, Lochcarron settled into the game and they took the lead on 38 minutes when, following a free-hit, Rory MacKenzie lost his marker and slipped the ball low past out-rushing Skye keeper Calum Nicolson. It looked like Lochcarron may take their lead into the break but Ross Gordon levelled on the stroke of half-time. Ian MacPherson’s corner from the left came to Gordon and his 20 yard shot, from right of centre, went low past keeper Peter MacKenzie’s right foot. Skye set siege on the Lochcarron goal from the restart and Peter MacKenzie twice saved well from Ross Gordon before, on 54 minutes, James Robertson played a free-hit to Gordon and he finished low to the keeper’s right. Archie Millar made it 3-1 on 63 minutes, running onto James Robertson’s corner from the left and crashing the ball high into the net from the front of the D. Angus Gilpin then showed great skills as he juggled the ball forward before lifting it over Peter MacKenzie, and the crossbar, as the keeper came off his line. Lochcarron attacks were now less frequent, and Gregor Cushnie saw his shot saved with his shins by Calum Nicolson before Cushnie’s later run from the right ended with a trip inside the D and referee Willie MacDonald pointed to the spot. Cushnie took the penalty, but Skye keeper Calum Nicolson made a brilliant save, diving low to his right to divert the ball over the top. Crisdean Finlayson, pushed forward from his full centre role, drove the ball past the post from a corner and Lochcarron couldn’t get the goal that would have set up a grandstand finish. Archie Millar got his second and Skye’s fourth goal on 84 minutes, striking the ball high into the net from a similar position to his first goal. The sides also contested the Alasdair Morrison Memorial Cup, which remembers former Skye player, youth coach and manager Ally ‘Mor’ Morrison from Kyleakin who passed away four years ago. The trophy was presented to Skye captain Ian MacPherson by Ally’s father John Angus Morrison, with the medals presented by Ally’s long-time partner Anne MacCuish. The man of the match quaich was awarded to Lochcarron’s defensive stalwart David MacCuish.
