Skye Camanachd 4 Col Glen 2 - UPDATED! | |
06 May 2015 The Skye Camanachd second team beat Col Glen 4-2 in their Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup second round tie at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 2 May 2015. Skye Camanachd second team manager Davie Pringle was with the Skye first team so Aonghas MacDonald looked after the side. He was able to call on the services of captain David MacInnes and Stewart Grant who returned to the squad after being with the senior side last weekend. There is also a place for a fit-again John Angus MacInnes who had recovered from injury and Ian MacPherson was also included. Iain Nicolson was called up by the Skye senior side whilst Aonghas MacDonald and Ross Nicolson dropped out of the squad. It was a young Col Glen squad that travelled North with three-quarters of their pool aged under 21. There were three 13 year olds as well as one 16 year old, one 17 year old, two 18 year olds and one 19 year old. Col Glen’s three 13 year olds - Caley McNaughton, who is a grand nephew of Jenny MacKenzie, Kyleakin, Connor Kennedy and Davie MacVicar’s nephew Scott MacVicar - were all in losing sides against Portree Primary School in the 2013 and 2014 MacKay Cup finals. The only previous time the sides had met was in the same competition in 2010 when Skye edged out their opponents. There were five of the MacVicar clan on show that day – current Skye Chairman Davie MacVicar and his son Neil for Skye with Davie’s brother Ronnie and his son Jamie and nephew Willie lining up for Col Glen. This time there were four MacVicars – brothers Jamie (18), Andrew (16) and Scott (13) as well as their 23 year old cousin Willie MacVicar - all in the Col Glen squad . This 2.30pm throw up was broadcast live on Cuillin FM’s “Camanachd Live” show. Skye opened brightly and John MacKenzie had a shot saved by Col Glen keeper Ewen Harrison in the opening minute after-which the Islanders forced two corners in quick succession. Skye defender Neil John Campbell was forced off injured after 6 minutes and Andrew Banks came on in his place. Ewen Harrison was called into action once again a minute later as he again denied John MacKenzie. Skye went in front on 12 minutes when wing centre Calum Gibb burst forward from midfield to make it 1-0. However Col Glen shocked their hosts when Steven MacKellar sent a 25 yard shot from the left high into the Skye net to make it 1-1 with 15 minutes played. And there was more to come from Col Glen as Connor Kennedy scored with a cross-come-shot a couple of minutes later which put the visitors 2-1 in front. Skye settled and John MacKenzie collected a ball from Iain MacLellan on 26 minutes before crashing an unstoppable shot into the back of the net to make it 2-2. Col Glen countered with a Connor Kennedy snap-shot going just wide a couple of minutes later. The game was now flowing from end to end and Skye forwards Iain MacLellan and Alan Palmer combined on 31 minutes and James Pringle saw his effort cleared off the goal-line. Pringle was not to be denied though and he scored on 32 minutes following a goalmouth scramble to put Skye back in front. The visitors were forced to make a change a minute later when Lorn Marshall had to leave the field with a cut hand and Stuart MacKellar came on in his place. Iain MacLellan made it 4-2 on 39 minutes when he took the ball down and sent it just inside the post. Col Glen then enjoyed a period of pressure in the closing minutes of the half but the Skye defence stayed firm and the Islanders took their 4-2 advantage into the break. Col Glen attacked from the restart and the half was just a minute old when Steven MacKellar saw a shot saved by Skye keeper Ryan Morrison and MacKellar was unable to profit from the rebound. Skye claimed for a penalty on 56 minutes when James Pringle went down as he was through on goal but referee Rab MacAskill waved away their appeals. A minute later, a David MacInnes shot from distance was saved by Ewen Harrison. Skye made their second change on 58 minutes with Daniel Morrison taking over from Calum Gibb. Skye had the chance to extend their lead just seconds later when a poor goal-hit came off John Angus MacInnes but keeper Harrison made a great save from the Skye forward’s shot. Skye were now turning the screw and Alan Palmer and John MacKenzie combined on 65 minutes with Ewen Harrison pulling off a fine save from MacKenzie’s goal-bound shot. Col Glen made another change on 73 minutes as youngster Scott MacVicar came off with Angus Churchill taking his place. Referee Rab MacAskill’s final whistle means Skye now travel to the Winterton to play the Inveraray reserves in the quarter-finals. Ewen Harrison saved with his feet from Daniel Morrison on 81 minutes before putting the ball out for a corner. James Pringle stood out for Skye whilst it was good to have John Angus MacInnes back from injury. Keeper Ewen Harrison and Andrew MacVicar were best for a Col Glen side which ran Skye all the way.
