Skye Camanachd 3 Newtonmore 3 | |
19 August 2019 The Skye Camanachd second team drew 3-3 with the Newtonmore second team in their Mowi North Division 1 clash at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 17 August 2019. Throw up was at 3pm and the whole match was broadcast LIVE online and on radio on Cuillin FM’s Camanachd LIVE show. Skye co-managers David MacInnes and Daniel Morrison had youngster Taylor Matheson back whilst Sam MacPhee started in defence with Connor Gilpin up front. Title challengers and current league champions Newtonmore were missing Scott Chisholm but Duncan Gorman returned after suffering a hand injury whilst playing for the first team. Skye opened playing towards the Braes end of the ground as the morning rain continued to fall. Skye took the lead on 24 minutes when Taylor Matheson’s shot was saved by ‘More keeper Calum Grover and Daniel Morrison produced a deft flick to turn the dropping rebound into the net. ‘More boss Orsten Gardner made a double substitution soon after; introducing Calum Stewart and Scott Campbell up front with Sorley Thomson and Ritchie Irvine withdrawn. The move paid almost immediate dividends when a rash swing caught Calum Stewart as Skye defended just inside the D and Stewart shot wide of goal. Referee Calum Girvan initially allowed advantage before bringing play back when no advantage transpired. Full centre Neil Stewart sent the spot-hit low into the net, to the keeper’s left, to make it 1-1 with 34 minutes on the clock. Skye regained the lead in first half stoppage time. ‘More defender Cameron McNiven was penalised for a push in the back of Skye’s Daniel Morrison, on the touchline wide on the left. Some quick-thinking saw Morrison play the free-hit into the danger area before the visiting defence had regrouped and the alert Taylor Matheson’s shot went high into the net off the keeper. Skye extended their lead on 50 minutes when substitute Cameron MacKay played a dangerous ball across goal from the left and Taylor Matheson finished from close range to notch his second goal of the afternoon. Newtonmore pulled a goal back straight from the restart as Duncan Gorman, making his return after recovering from a hand injury suffered whilst playing for the first team, scored from the left of the D after Skye failed to clear a diagonal ball forward from the right. Newtonmore earned a point on 57 minutes when wing centre Andrew Buchan sprinted forward to get on the end of Craig MacLeod’s corner from the right which eventually fell for him at the back post and his effort deceived Skye’s Murphy Henderson with the ball squeezing low into the net at the keeper’s right post. The wet weather worsened as the second half went on and both sets of players deserve credit for serving up such an entertaining contest. Newtonmore’s Cameron McNiven collected the game’s only booking. This was Skye’s final home match of the season and they finish with trips to Glengarry, Kingussie and Lovat. Newtonmore remain fourth in the table. They now trail leaders Glengarry by seven points but they do have four games in hand with the sides still to play eachother home and away.
