Skye Camanachd 2 Newtonmore 6 | |
01 June 2016 The Newtonmore second team returned from Portree with both points after a 6-2 win over Skye Camanachd in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 match at Pairc nan Laoch on Saturday 28 May 2016. Skye boss Davie Pringle welcomed Neil John Campbell, Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod and James Pringle back into his squad after they featured for the first team. Aonghas MacDonald and Chris MacLennan were with the Skye senior side and Connor Gilpin was rested. Newtonmore boss Cammy MacDonald had John MacKenzie free of suspension after he served a one match ban against the Kinlochshiel seconds a week earlier for passing through the disciplinary points threshold. However Struan Kish was banned following his red card in the Kinlochshiel game whilst forwards Neil Stewart and David Cheyne were also missing whilst David Fraser was with the first team. This 3pm throw up was broadcast LIVE on radio and online on Cuillin FM’s Camanachd LIVE show. Skye played towards the Struan Road end of the ground in the first half. After an even opening period, the first shot on target came on 10 minutes when ‘More’s John MacKenzie turned and struck the ball goalwards from the right of the D but Skye keeper Ryan Morrison turned the ball away. Skye responded and an Ally ”Spod” MacLeod strike from wide on the left on 14 minutes flashed across the goal after good play from Iain MacLellan on the Skye right. Newtonmore were now starting to take control of the game and Ryan Morrison saved with his feet from Conor Jones, back in the Newtonmore side after injury, on 21 minutes and he also got the ball away ahead of the advancing Duncan Gorman. Skye made a change after 31 minutes with Ruaraidh MacLeod coming on at left wing forward in place of Thomas Wilson. Ally “Spod” MacLeod dropped back to wing centre, swapping wings with Calum Gibb. Darrin Fowler needed treatment for a head knock on 35 minutes but he was able to continue. Skye attacks were now rare with Newtonmore buckshee back Iain Richardson looking particularly impressive. Newtonmore went in front on 38 minutes when John MacKenzie chested down a Darrin Fowler ball from the left and he turned to his right and blasted the ball into the net to make it 1-0. Conor Jones made it 2-0 following a free-hit on the right on 41 minutes with his strike deflecting into the net off a Skye defender David Grant’s caman. A touch of niggle was starting to creep into the game and Skye defender Neil John Campbell was yellow-carded by referee John Matheson as the first half drew to a close. Skye took Ross Nicolson on at the break and he took over in attack from Iain MacLellan who dropped back into midfield with Calum Gibb coming off. Skye made a lively start to the second half, forcing two early corners and a Ruaraidh MacLeod strike went just over the top. John MacKenzie sliced a shot wide of goal on 50 minutes. The next goal was going to be crucial to the outcome of this game and it went to Newtonmore. Duncan Gorman collected a John MacKenzie pass and cut in from the ‘More left before flicking the ball past Skye keeper Ryan Morrison to make it 3-0 on 54 minutes, taking a knock to the leg in the process. Skye pulled a goal back when Iain MacLellan found John Angus MacInnes who rifled in a shot from the Skye right, beating the keeper on his right side, to make it 3-1 on 63 minutes. Ryan Morrison earned a round of applause from the crowd after saving a John MacKenzie shot with his feet before clearing the danger. Newtonmore keeper Callum Grover made a superb save with his hand to deny Ruaraidh MacLeod following a Skye free-hit on 72 minutes. It was Newtonmore who extended their lead when Kenny Ross played the ball into the danger area and a superb low drive from Martin Hall from wide on the left beat a helpless Ryan Stewart to make it 4-1 on 74 minutes. A John Angus MacInnes shot went over the bar a minute later. The pick of the afternoon’s goals came on 77 minutes. Kenny Ross, who played despite being unwell during the previous 48 hours, came deep to win possession and his long ball forward started a fine passing move. Conor Jones controlled the ball in space in midfield and he played it forward to John MacKenzie who stopped the ball with his feet and flicked it to Martin Hall who found Duncan Gorman and he finished in style to make it 5-1. A really good individual effort from Skye youngster Ruaraidh MacLeod made it 5-2 on 82 minutes. MacLeod won possession and played a one-two with James Pringle before forcing his way through the ‘More defence and slamming the ball home. Ryan Morrison palmed a Duncan Gorman effort away to safety a minute later. Skye youngster Martin Pringle came on for the closing stages. But Newtonmore had the final say as a fine solo Duncan Gorman goal 4 minutes from time completed his hat-trick to seal a 6-2 win. The win extends Newtonmore’s lead at the top of the table to three points but they have played two games more than second placed Strathglass. Skye remain at the foot of the table but this was only their second home match of the season so they’ll be hoping that a run of games in Portree will help them pick up some points.
