Skye Camanachd 2 Newtonmore 0 – After Match Reaction | |
17 April 2014 Both managers gave their reaction following the Skye Camanachd first team’s 2-0 Marine Harvest North Division 1win over the Newtonmore second team at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 12 April 2014. Speaking on Cuillin FM’s Camanachd Live programme after the game, Newtonmore boss Cammy MacDonald said, “We got off to a pretty disastrous start and let in a really soft goal. However we steadied the ship after that but Skye were pretty strong in that first period and we were relived at half time to go in just 1-0 down. We had a lot of pressure at the start of the second half but you really need to take one or two of these chances to get yourself back into the game. Unfortunately we never took them and Skye get the killer second goal and it’s game over then.” When asked about home Newtonmore found playing in Marine Harvest North Division 1, which is a mixture of first teams and second teams, MacDonald said, “When you go to places like Strathglass, who are a true first team, or to Skye - every time you come to Skye it’s a tough game against their second team, never mind their first team – and with us being a second team, you are trying to introduce some younger players into the game. We put some young ones on at the end but, really, they are not going to learn a lot from the likes of today which was a battle and that’s not conducive to bringing on young players into the game. We missed a wee bit of experience up front but that’s not an excuse as the boys who came here put in a good shift. All in all, it’s a disappointing result but not a disaster.”
With Skye Camanachd first team manager John MacLeod working, assistant managers Aonghas MacDonald and David Pringle looked after the side. Aonghas MacDonald also gave his reaction to Cuillin FM’s Camanachd Live Show. He said, “We got the two points which is what we came for so we certainly can’t complain with that. It was a bit tight at times, a wee bit more so that we would have liked. We could have done a wee bit more up front in the first half with the wind but to be honest, we are very happy with the performance, especially in the second half. In a way, the early goal seemed to do us more harm than good as we seemed to take our foot of the gas after that. When asked about how the players had performed, MacDonald said, “It’s another clean sheet, the defence did very well, the centre line fought away in the second half and we were maybe a wee bit over elaborate up front at times. Stevie (Morrison), both Allys (MacDonald and MacLeod) and Jamie Gannon did really well and we haven’t lost a goal in the league yet so we hope to keep that going. We needed the second goal and it was a good strike by Danny (Morrison). It was a good boost and it stopped us biting our nails at the sideline. Looking ahead to next weekend’s RBS MacTavish Plate meeting with Orion Group Premiership side Lochaber, the former Skye first team manager added, “It will be an interesting test for us against Lochaber. I’m sure a lot of people didn’t expect us to do as well as we did against Glenurquhart. We’ve got nothing to lose and it will be good experience for some of the guys and we’ll definitely look forward to it. We’ll hopefully get a big crowd as that makes a big difference to the players. There is a real competition for places this year. Not just in the team but in the squad as a whole so it’s a healthy position to be in compared to the last couple of years." |
