Skye Camanachd 2 Glenurquhart 1 | |
17 July 2013 Skye Camanachd beat Glenurquhart 2-1 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 13 July 2013. Ross Cowie looked after the Skye side and the Islanders had a keeper crisis with Jamie Gannon on holiday and Michael Nicolson ruled out with an ankle injury so Ross Graham stepped in to play in goal. Jordan Murchison made his first appearance since recovering from an ankle injury. U17 player Stephen Murchison was included and he started on the bench for this noon throw up. Third place Glenurquhart have been fielding a young side in recent weeks and they beat Fort William 4-1 in their last outing. They were missing some regulars including Ross Macaulay, who was on first team duty, and Calum Smith and Euan Lloyd. Glenurquhart opened with the wind at their backs and they enjoyed most of the early pressure with Ben Hosie causing the Islanders’ defence all sorts of problems. Skye keeper Ross Graham had to stretch to his right to stop a Cairn Urquhart shot with his foot at his right post. At the other end, Skye’s Jordan Murchison twice went close within a matter of seconds but the visiting defence stayed firm. Home keeper Ross Graham again denied Cairn Urquhart as the match remained goalless. Glenurquhart had shaded the first half but it was Skye who took the lead a couple of minutes into first half stoppage time. Angie MacDonald sprinted out to the right to win possession for Skye. He sent a deep ball across goal which was chased by Jordan Murchison. The Skye forward cut back to make an angle for himself before sending a great drive into the top corner of the net. The Glen had lost Ben Hosie through injury which was a blow. He had been carrying an injury going into the game but he had to be withdrawn during the first half. Skye were the dominant side in the second half as they played with the elements. The closest they came to increasing their advantage was late in the game when substitute Ally MacCrimmon was found unmarked at the end of the D. However as he was about to shoot, Glen full back Donald Fraser threw his stick at the ball which put the Skye forward off and earned Fraser a yellow card from referee Archie Ritchie. Skye failed to create anything from the resultant free hit. The game remained in the balance until second half injury time when Skye substitute Ally MacCrimmon smashed the ball past Cameron MacLennan in the Glen goal to make it 2-0. This was to prove to be a crucial goal as there was still time for Bradley Dixon to burst forward and pull a goal back from a corner on the left. Mike Cameron looked after Glenurquhart from the touchline with Iain MacLeod in action on the field and he identified Jordan Murchison as the difference between the sides. Few who watched the game would have argued although Ross Graham’s saves early in the game were important for the Islanders. Bradley Dixon shone for Glenurquhart and full back Donald Fraser held the defence together, particularly in the second half. The win means that Skye leap-frog Glenurquhart to go third in the table. The game was well refereed by match official Archie Ritchie who earned the respect of both sets of players with his good decision making.
