Skye Camanachd 2 Caberfeidh 2 - UPDATED! | |
31 July 2015 The Skye Camanachd second team came from two goals down top draw 2-2 with the Caberfeidh second team in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 clash at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 25 July 2015. Skye boss Davie Pringle made five changes to the squad he named for last weekend’s postponed league match against the Lochaber seconds. David Grant, Ross Nicolson, Ryan Morrison and Connor Gilpin are replaced by Stewart Grant, Chris Rose, John Gillies, Neil John Campbell and Iain Nicolson. Pringle was not available on the day so Skye first team manager John MacLeod looked after the team. The Skye seconds had not been in action since they beat Lewis Camanachd in Shawbost on Saturday 4 July 2015. They were awarded the points after Strathspey Camanachd were unable to raise a team for their league visit to Portree on Saturday 11 July 2015 whilst last weekend’s trip to Spean Bridge for a league meeting with the Lochaber reserves was postponed because of an unplayable field. The second half of this noon throw up was broadcast live on radio and online by Cuillin FM on their “Camanachd Live” show from 1pm. Skye played towards the Struan Road end of the ground in the first half and they laid siege on the Cabers goal from the outset. Caberfeidh keeper Roy Mutter was called into action after just a couple of minutes whilst James Pringle shot just past the post just after. A John Gillies run from the left on 5 minutes, after he was played in by Iain Nicolson, was foiled by keeper Mutter who blocked the ball at his near post at the expense of a corner. Skye continued to press and James Pringle shot goalwards on 6 minutes whilst Roy Mutter came off his line to block a John Angus MacInnes effort just 60 seconds later. Roy Mutter saved with his feet from Angie MacDonald and the keeper denied MacDonald again from the resultant corner. The Cabers keeper was the busiest player on the park and he came forward to chest down an Ian Nicolson ball into the D from the right and John Gillies knocked the rebound just the wrong side of the post from close range. A heavy fall of rain left the pitch slippery and Skye’s frustration levels were rising. John Angus MacInnes had the ball in the net with a shot from the left on 24 minutes but referee Evan MacRae’s whistle had gone and the Skye forward was penalised for an infringement. Caberfeidh had defended stoutly though and they got their reward on 25 minutes when Gavin McLachlan punished slack defending by the Islanders as he ran through the defence before firing home to give his side a 1-0 lead. Skye were shocked but they tried to get back on level terms on 29 minutes as a good James Pringle run ended with Roy Mutter making a tidy save with his legs from the young Skye forwards shot. Skye pushed forward again and Mutter turned another Pringle effort away for a corner a minute later. The visitors doubled their lead on 33 minutes. Andrew MacMaster found Ben MacDonald around 12 yards from goal and the Cabers youngster swivelled before shooting into the net to make it 2-0. Cabers forward Colin MacLennan shot wide 3 minutes later. There was a chance for Skye to pull a goal back late in the half following a good passing move which ended with Angie MacDonald shooting wide. The sun came out from the start of the second half and Skye attacked from the throw up. Good wing play from James Pringle set up a chance for Angie MacDonald but he put his shot wide of goal. Roy Mutter made a terrific save above his head on 48 minutes as he turned away a John Gilles drive and Iain Nicolson put the rebound past the post. Mutter was on top form again on 51 minutes as he saved an Iain MacLellan shot above his head at the expense of a corner. Iain Nicolson shot high and wide a couple of minutes later. Skye made a change with Thomas Wilson coming on for Angie MacDonald. Wilson went to wing centre with Iain Nicolson going to full forward. Skye pulled a goal back on 64 minutes when Iain Nicolson held the ball up before slipping a pass to John Gillies who crashed a shot into the net to make it 2-1. Caberfeidh fought back and Jamie Gannon saved a Gavin McLachlan drive with his feet on 67 minutes. Skye came within a whisker on levelling on 70 minutes when Jamie MacLeod did well to block an Iain Nicolson shot on the goal-line and he cleared the ball for a corner. Skye drew level on 74 minutes. This time scorer John Gillies turned provider as he set up Iain Nicolson who sent a great drive high into the net to make it 2-2. Skye went for the winning goal but they had a let-off 4 minutes from time when defender Stewart Grant some-how stretched across the goal-line to clear the ball with Andrew MacMaster in close attendance. Skye passed up two good late chances to take both points. First Iain Nicolson played in John Gillies but he sent the ball past the post with just 2 minutes remaining. Then, with a minute to go, there was panic in the Caberfeidh defence as a Scott MacLachlan goal-hit fell at the feet of Skye full forward Iain Nicolson but he was unable to get any power in his shot and McLachlan blocked his effort before clearing the ball. It turned out to be a good point for Skye as title rivals Glengarry lost 4-2 at home to Aberdeen University.
