27 August 2013 Alzheimers Scotland has had preliminary discussions with view to launching a set of Shinty Memories cards. The project follows the success of the Football Memories project, which included about 60 cards with a footballer’s photo on the front and some basic info about them on the back, and Alzheimers Scotland felt that a similar project on shinty, encompassing players and clubs from across the country, would be beneficial. Each card will have a picture on the front, preferably a mixture of players, teams or perhaps an action shot from famous games. Alternatively there could be views of grounds that may well have looked a bit different many years ago or indeed be of a team that no longer exists. Other suggestions include a club badge or a well known shinty referee. There will also be a few relevant bullet points on the back of each card. The playing period to be covered should be from the era 1950-1980 although late 1940s and very early 1980s photos will probably qualify. The cards will be laminated and they will be just under twice the size of a playing card. The target is to hold a Shinty Memories card launch in the spring of 2014. A number of shinty volunteers have already been lined up to gather suitable pictures but project lead Ian Gibson is keen to recruit some more assistance from shinty volunteers and clubs throughout the country.
