Scots Win Iomain Exhibition Match | |
27 October 2013 Scotland were 5-0 winners in the Iomain Exhibition match which followed the Marine Harvest Shinty / Hurling International first test between Ireland and Scotland at Croke Park on Saturday 26 October 2013. Scotland took on a team from Dublin in a ten minute hybrid game called Iomain - one of the Gaelic words for both shinty and hurling - which was played ahead of the International Rules Football second test match between Ireland and Australia. Players from both sides used specially designed universal sticks developed by highland caman producer, Alan MacPherson, in conjunction with Irish hurley maker, Michael Barron. They played to a specific set of rules with, only goals counting, for the first time. Scotland ran out 5-0 winners with goals from Newtonmore’s Glen MacKintosh, Kenny Ross from Lochcarron who is on the Scotland coaching staff, Lovat’s Kevin Bartlett, Lee Bain from Kingussie and John MacRae of Kinlochshiel. Both the Camanachd Association and GAA hope the Iomain prototype will travel round the world as a sport played wherever Irish and Scots have settled. The bottom third of the stick is the same dimension and design for both teams with the handle length being variable. |
