Scotland & Ireland Meet In 2016 Marine Harvest Shinty / Hurling / Camogie Internationals ………… 3 Days To Go! | |
19 October 2016 Ireland senior manager Jeffrey Lynskey and his assistant Gregory O’Kane have named a strong squad for the 2016 Marine Harvest Shinty / Hurling international against Scotland at the Bught Park on Saturday 22 October 2016. This year’s meeting is a one-off clash with the Marine Harvest Quaich at stake. Irish boss Lynskey has warned his players about the intensity of the fixture and, after losing in Inverness last year whilst requiring late points to win 16-14 at Crake Park four weeks later, he has named a strong squad for this year’s clash. Lynskey has only retained eight players from the quad that travelled to Inverness last year – captain and keeper Eoin Reilly, Micky Boyle, Mickey Burke, Paul Divilly, Damien Healy, Brian Murphy, Shane Nolan and James Toher. The eye-catching selections this year are trio brothers Noel McGrath and John McGrath and Michael Breen – all from 2016 All-Ireland winners Tipperary. Shane Dooley adds strength to the visitor’s attacking options and he scored three goals and three points when the Irish beat Scotland 51-23 in Ennis in 2012. He also scored three in Inverness in 2010 and scored the year before. He is a powerful player and he will be a handful for the Scots’ defence. There’s also a place for 2015 Ireland U21 captain Gerry Keegan who impressed when the Irish young guns won in Inverness last year whilst Meath’s 2016 Christy Ring captain James Toher is included once again. Scotland Head Coach Ronald Ross said, “Ireland have again upped the ante this year and that’s down to our better performances last year when we won in Inverness and we only lost by two points at Croke Park. They have named a strong squad which makes it all the harder for us but that’s what you want; you want to test yourself against the best. The new Irish players in their squad will quickly see that they have to make adjustments. They can’t catch the ball and that’s a big thing for them. Some players adjust to that quickly and some take a bit longer and that’s one reason why Ireland seem to get stronger as the game goes on. Michael Breen, Paul McGrath and John McGrath – who all started for Tipperary in the 2016 All-Ireland Final - have been selected and all three players have been nominated for All-Star awards this year which shows how consistently they have played over the season. Ireland will come at us all guns blazing. There’s no doubt about that. However I believe we have the strength and depth to nullify their threat.”
