Pre-season Friendly Results – Saturday 16 February 2013 | |
17 February 2013 With just a fortnight to go until the start of the 2013 shinty season, the pre-season friendlies continued on Saturday 16 February 2013.
Skye Camanachd 0 Newtonmore 2 Newtonmore retained the George Michie Memorial Cup with a 0-0 win over Skye Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Danny MacRae put Newtonmore ahead on 23 minutes when he collected a Blair MacKintosh pass at the edge of the D and slotted the ball past Skye keeper Ross Graham. Newtonmore went 2-0 up on 23 minutes when Danny MacRae collected a Paul MacArthur corner from the left. MacRae he held the ball up before slipping a pass to Steven MacDonald who sent a blistering drive across the keeper into the net. Newtonmore enjoyed a lot of late pressure but the Skye defence of Steven Morrison, Shockie MacLennan, Ally “Spod” MacLeod and Neil MacVicar were in superb form. Newtonmore captain Jamie Robinson was presented with the George Michie Memorial Cup by George’s nephew Cameron MacDonald.
Beauly 3 Kingussie 3 Beauly gained a credible 3-3 draw with Kingussie at Braeview Park. Conor Ross, Marc MacLauchlan and substitute Martin Davidson got the Beauly goals whilst Barrie Dallas, Savio Genini and Paul Gow were on target for Kingussie.
Kilmallie 0 Lochaber 2 There was a derby match between Kilmallie and Lochaber at the Canal Parks with the BSW Cup at stake. In the end it was Orion Group Premiership new boys Lochaber who lifted the trophy thanks to goals from Shaun Nicolson and another from Stuart Callison. Martin Graham gave Kilmallie boss an injury scare when he twisted his knee but fortunately the injury is not as bad as first thought and is not the recurrence of a previous problem.
Caberfeidh 0 Lovat 9 Lovat led Caberfeidh 8-0 at half time in their game at Castle Leod. They added just one more second half goal for a 9-0 win. Jamie Matheson got a double and Owen Ferguson and Greg Matheson each grabbed hat-tricks. Lewis Tawse got the other.
Glenurquhart 6 Strathglass 1 Glenurquhart had their second pre-season friendly win over Marine Harvest North Division 1 opposition when they beat Strathglass 6-1 at Blairbeg to lift the MacDonald Cup. David Smart got Glenurquhart’s opener and a Fraser Heath strike made it 2-0. Strathglass had the chance to pull a goal back when they were awarded a penalty but Garry Reid missed from the spot. However veteran Strathglass forward Robert Geddes did pull a goal back only for James MacPherson to restored Glenurquhart’s two goal advantage. Glenurquhart added to their tally in the last quarter of the game. John Barr made it 4-1 after a poor hit out then Ewan Brady showed great class with a 30 yard shot into the top corner of the net. Brady got his second with another sublime strike when flicked the ball over his head before giving the keeper no chance with a chest high dive which made it 6-1. The score slightly flattered the Glen as it was a close game with home keeper Stuart MacKintosh pulling off some great saves. Fraser Heath won the man of the match award.
Inverness 0 Kinlochshiel 5 Kinlochshiel sent a strong side to Inverness with keeper Graham Kennedy and defender Calum MacLean their only absentees. ‘Shiel let 2-0 at the break and add three more goals in the second half. Finlay MacRae and Gordie MacDonald each scored twice and David Falconer got the other. Inverness lost defender Dougie Rankin in the first half with an eye injury in what was a good work out for both teams.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Inveraray 1 A first half Lewis MacNicol goal was all that separated Glasgow Mid Argyll and Inveraray at Yoker. Inveraray’s Stuart Robertson was red carded in the second half. Inveraray fielded a strong side but GMA played well and were never out of the game.
Strachur 1 Oban Camanachd 5 Oban Camanachd were 5-1winners at Strachur. The home side took a 20 minute lead but Iain MacMillan levelled a couple of minutes later to make it 1-1 at the break. When Andrew MacCuish put Oban ahead just 3 minutes into the second half, there was only going to be one winner. Scott MacMillan made it 3-1 on 53 minutes and Lewis Cameron added a fourth on 62 minutes. Youngster Craig MacDougall netted 10 minutes from time to complete the scoring and round off a 5-1 victory.
Aberdour 0 Kyles Athletic 6 The Aberdour first team went down 6-0 to Kyles Athletic in their meeting in Fife. Thomas Whyte, a Roddy MacColl hat-trick. Euan Campbell and Scott MacDonald got the goals.
Glengarry 0 Taynuilt 2 Glengarry went down 2-0 against Taynuilt at Craigard.
Lewis Camanachd 2 Skye Camanachd 7 Skye Camanachd beat Lewis Camanachd 7-2 in the clash of the Island clubs at Shawbost. Lewis gave a good account of themselves and only trailed 3-2 at one point with Will Church and Duncan MacIntyre each finding a way past Skye player / manager Murdo Morrison who stood in in goal. John Angus MacInnes was the difference between the sides and he grabbed a hat-trick for Skye with fellow forward Iain MacLellan scoring twice. Magnus Burd and David Grant were also on target.
Fort William 2 Lochaber 2 The Fort William and Lochaber second teams had a derby meeting at An Aird. Fort William won by the odd goal in seven when the sides met at Spean Bridge a fortnight ago. Lewis Morrison scored twice for the home side whilst Finley MacDonald scored Lochaber’s opener and Martin Patterson got the other
Glenurquhart 6 Strathglass 1 Glenurquhart won the Ally Bhan Memorial Cup with a 6-1 win over Strathglass in the noon throw up between the club’s reserve sides at Blairbeg. The Glen pitch passed an early morning pitch inspection and was deemed able to take two games with the senior sides meeting for the MacDonald Cup later in the day. Iain MacLeod, Calum Miller twice, Calum Fraser, Ross Macaulay and an own goal all counted for Glenurquhart.
Inverness 0 Kinlochshiel 10 There was a reserve meeting between Inverness and Kinlochshiel at the Bught. ‘Shiel, who finished second in Marine Harvest North Division 2 last season proved too much for and Inverness team which ended their 2012 campaign in bottom place in Marine Harvest North Division 3. Iain Fraser and Scott MacLean each got hat-tricks, for Kinlochshiel whilst Jordan Fraser and Sandy MacDiarmid bagged doubles.
Caberfeidh 1 Newtonmore 11 The Caberfeidh and Newtonmore second teams met at Castle Leod and the visitors proved too strong running out 11-1 winners. Martin Hall returned to the Newtonmore side in spectacular fashion and he scored four first half goals. Callum Stewart got a first half hat-trick whilst North U14 player Sam Richardson also scored three times with his trio all coming in the second half. Mark MacDonald completed the scoring.
Strathspey Camanachd 3 Kingussie 3 Strathspey Camanachd earned a morale-boosting 3-3 draw with Kingussie at Freuchie Park. Andy Hay scored twice for Strathspey whilst Martin Davis got the other. Fifteen year old Fachie Grant bagged a brace for Kingussie whilst Steven Fraser got the other.
Tayforth 0 Lochside Rovers 4 Lochside Rovers had a comfortable 4-0 win at Tayforth. Brian MacCallum was their star man scoring all four goals.
Aberdour 6 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 The Aberdour and Glasgow Mid Argyll reserve sides met in Fife with the home side running out 6-1 winners.
Bute 4 Kilmory 2 The match between Bute and Kilmory was switched to Ardnahoe Farm as the Meadows was unplayable. The Islanders led 2-0 through goals from John MacCallum and Iain MacDonald before a Kilmory fightback squared the game thanks to efforts from David McAlister and David MacFadyen. However a Tom MacMillan strike and Iain MacDonald's second goal of the afternoon gave new Bute manager Graham Fisher a winning start.
Dropkick Sixes Glenorchy won the Dropkick Sixes in Edinburgh. Teams from Edinburgh University, Glasgow University and Aberdeen University also took park. Glenorchy beat Edinburgh University 2-1 in the final after drawing with them twice in the section games. Glenorchy captain Duncan Smith was presented with the trophy. Badenoch & Strathspey won the Women’s competition in an event run by Edinburgh University Shinty Club.
Col Glen P Bute P The derby match between Col Glen and the Bute reserves was postponed as the pitch at Glendaruel was unplayable.
