Portree High School Take Part In 2014 Wade Cup | |
22 November 2014 Portree High School took part in the 2014 Wade Cup tournament which was held at the Dell, Kingussie on Wednesday 19 November 2014. This Schools Camanachd Association competition is for U16 teams and Portree were joined by sides from Lochaber, Kingussie, Glenurquhart and Charleston Academy. The Portree side included James Pringle, John Gillies, Ruairidh MacLeod, Murphy Henderson, Jack Henderson, Emma Gordon, Stewart Taylor and Martin Pringle. A round robin league was played with 15 minute matches. The overall standard of shinty was high and the competition was played in a very sporting manner throughout which is to the credit of all players and their coaches. Kingussie finished top of the league with Lochaber just a point behind so both qualified to contest the final. The final started at a quick pace and play flowed from end-to-end. However both defences were on top and there was no scoring at half-time. Kingussie went in front a minute after the restart. Iain Robinson fired a speculative shot which deciveded the Lochaber keeper and the ball trickled into the net just inside the keeper’s left post. The game continued at a hectic pace but despite their best efforts, Lochaber couldn’t conjure up an equaliser and Kingussie had goalkeepr Robert Shiells and full back Iain Richardson to thank for some great saves and goal line clearences. In the end, Iain Robinson’s solitary strike proved to be enough to keep the trophy in Badenoch. Mr Tommy Wade, who donated the trophy for Schools Competition in the 1970s, presented the Wade Cup to Kings captain Calum Grant and medals to players. The Schools Camanachd Association thanked Kingussie Camanachd Club for hosting the event and Ronald Ross and Russell Jones from the Camanachd Association for refereeing the matches. Lovat Shinty Club donated the match balls. |
