Oban Lorn Ladies 0 Skye Camanachd Ladies 7 - UPDATED! | |
16 March 2015 Skye Camanachd Ladies opened their WCA Marine Harvest National Division 1 campaign with a convincing 7-0 win over Oban Lorn Ladies at Mossfield on Sunday 15 March 2015. This is Oban Lorn’s first season in WCA Marine Harvest National Division 1 following their promotion from the second tier at the end of last season. Skye Camanachd Ladies Head Coach Sarah Corrigall missed the trip so Robbie Gordon took charge of the side. As well as keeper Corrigall, he was without Caitlin MacLean and Helen Lamond. Catriona Gibb’s attempts to get to the game were thwarted but Lorna MacRae was able to play and she took over Gibb’s midfield role. Ilana Paterson replaced Sarah Corrigall in goal. It was a bright, sunny day in Oban for this 1pm throw up and the teams lined-up in a 10-a-side format. The game started at a furious pace with Skye taking control from the throw up. Lorne MacRae was dominating the centre line, ably assisted by wing centres Izzy Law and Emma Gordon and it was this midfield dominance that was to prove too much for the Oban side. Skye ‘s Jenna Beaton found the net on 7 minutes with a 20 yard drive which left the goalie with no chance and made it 1-0. The game continued to be played in the Lorn half and Anna MacDonald found the net with on 12 minutes with an impressive drive from the edge of the D. Skye continued to push forward and although Lorn had started to find their feet, it was Skye who kept the pressure on and scored again with some good passing between Gordon and MacRae in the centre giving Beaton her second of the day to make it 3-0. Skye were on a roll and found the net again after some lovely play from the young Kirsty Dibble on the wing aided by Anna MacDonald and Jenna Beaton collected the ball in space before slotting it home for her hat-trick. Lorn only made it into the Skye half on two occasions in the first half but the visiting defence was solid with Roz Lamond at full back, helped by Nicola MacSween and Christina MacDonald. Indeed stand-in goalie liana Paterson only touched the ball twice in the whole game. It was all Skye at this stage and their centre line was in full control and some good inter-passing between forwards and centre line allowed Lorna MacRae to add her name on the score sheet with an impressive long range-shot past the helpless Oban goalie which made it 5-0. Minutes later, Jenna Beaton added a sixth following some good play from Anna MacDonald. MacDonald found Beaton loitering on the edge of the D and the pass gave the new Skye captain a simple tap-in to make it 6-0. MacDonald was in fine form and she found the net herself after some good work from young Kirsty Dibble on the wing. MacDonald smashed the ball into the roof of the net to make it 7-0. However controversially, this goal wasn’t to count in the final tally. Moments later it was Dibble that had the chance of scoring but was thwarted by the Lorne keeper who was now finding her feet in the goals. Skye brought on Fiona Lamond to replace Emma Gordon at half-time whilst Korri Henderson came on for Roz Lamond at the back. Lorn seemed to find some of the form that saw them gain promotion into the Marine Harvest National Division 1 and began to see more of the ball. With Lamond off, the defence was well-marshalled by Nicola MacSween and Skye never looked like losing a goal. Skye made further changes when Izzy Law was replaced by Katie Lamond in the centre line. The game became more even but it was Skye who struck again with Anna MacDonald making a run through the Lorne defence to slot the ball home for Skye. Skye were taking shots at the Oban goal from all angles now with only the home goalie standing between them and a bigger winning margin and some top drawer saves denied MacRae, Beaton, MacDonald and Lamond. Skye brought on Katherine Dibble for her senior team debut and the youngster showed excellent potential and did not look out of place in the side. The final result was recorded as 7-0 with Skye claiming an 8-0 victory. The confusion seemed to surround Anna MacDonald’s second goal during the first half. However it wasn’t given so she was denied a hat-trick. This was the Skye Ladies opening league fixture following the postponement of their match against Lochaber Ladies at Spean Bridge the previous weekend. This match has now been rescheduled for Sunday 22 March 2015.
