27 December 2017 The Oban Celtic veterans (over 30s) side were penalty shoot-out winners against the Oban Celtic Young Guns (under 30s) at Mossfield on Tuesday 26 December 2017. The Veterans came from 3-1 down to draw this Boxing Day clash 3-3 before shocking the youngsters and winning the resultant penalty shoot-out. The number of players on show demonstrated a healthy player pool available to Oban Celtic for this coming season and it manager Kenny Wotherspoon will have been pleased to see Andy Hunt back from injury for the veterans whilst Connor Howe turned out for the Young Guns. The Veterans made a slow start to this annual clash and some quick interplay amongst the Young Guns forward line created several opportunities. The Youngsters took advantage on two occasions as a couple of impressive Daniel Madej finishes saw them take a 2-0 advantage into the break. A tactical change at half-time worked to the Veterans’ advantage. This positional switch saw John Hill move from full back to full forward and he began to unsettle the youngsters’ back line. The make-shift full forward helped pull a goal back when he went on a mazy run before forcing an error from keeper Iain MacFarlane which resulted in an own goal. The young guns struck back though when Daniel MacMillan’s 30 yard shot flew into the top corner of the net, giving keeper Jack Hill no chance, to make it 3-1. Anyone who assumed the Young Guns would go on to win the game would be mistaken though as the Veterans fought back again and John Hill did well to slot the ball home after a lofted corner. The revival continued and substitute Scott Turnbull scrambled home a late equaliser to make it 3-3. The contest would be decided by a penalty shoot-out and it was a tense affair. When Andy MacDonald converted for the youngsters and Donald Campbell did like-wise for the veterans, it all came down to Scott Burnett and he held his nerve to slot his penalty into the bottom corner of the net to clinch an unlikely victory for the Veterans Les Kinvig for the Veterans picked up the man of the match accolade.
