Newtonmore Beat Portree In 2016 MacKay Cup (North) Final | |
24 June 2016 Newtonmore Primary School were crowned 2016 MacKay Cup (North) Final winners, beating Portree Primary School 5-3 after extra-time at Craigard Park, Invergarry on Monday 20 June 2016. This 3pm throw up was played 35 minutes each-way with a 10 minutes each-way extra-time period if necessary and penalties thereafter if required. Newtonmore started with the wind advantage and Skye MacKintosh gave them the lead in the opening minute. An Angus Gilpin goal drew Portree level but it was ‘More who led 2-1 at half-time with Marcus Orr on target. A Kepa Roy goal gave Newtonmore a 3-1 lead but Portree produced a storming finish and they scored twice in the closing 10 minutes through Taylor Matheson and Liam MacQueen to make it 3-3 and take the final to an extra-time period. A quick Newtonmore double from Skye MacKintosh and Marcus Orr – their second strikes of the afternoon – had their team leading 5-3. Portree tried to make another comeback but the Newtonmore defence stood firm and saw out the remainder of the match for a deserved win. Newtonmore will now face the Bute Primaries in the MacKay Cup (National) Final at An Aird, Fort William on Saturday 25 June 2016. Throw up is at 1.15pm and Ronnie Campbell is the match referee.
