Newtonmore 5 Skye Camanachd 1 | |
18 May 2016 Skye Camanachd were knocked out of the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup at the second round stage, losing 5-1 to the Newtonmore second team at the Eilan on Saturday 14 May 2016. Skye boss Davie Pringle made two changes to the squad which beat the Fort William second team in Marine Harvest North Division 1 a week earlier. Chris Rose and Aonghas MacDonald were added to the Skye first team pool so Chris MacLennan and Thomas Wilson – both back from hand injuries – came into the second team and both started this 3.30pm throw up in midfield. Newtonmore manager Cammy MacDonald fielded a strong spine to his side with Scott Campbell at full back, Kenny Ross at full centre, David Cheyne at buckshee forward and full forward John MacKenzie who was free to play but he misses Newtonmore’s league trip to Kirkton to play the Kinlochshiel seconds this coming Saturday as he serves a one match ban for passing through the disciplinary points threshold. Iain Robinson, eligible to play in this competition as he is still an U17-aged player, made an appearance as a substitute. Newtonmore were 5-3 winners when they played Skye in the league at the Eilan at the beginning of April. A back-hand strike from John MacKenzie from around the penalty spot made it 1-0 on 14 minutes. MacKenzie got his and ‘More’s second on 23 minutes although the goal should perhaps have been credited to Duncan Gorman as his strike hit the roof of the net and came back out. However MacKenzie made sure by forcing the rebound over the line and was credited with the goal by the officials. Duncan Gorman did get on the scoresheet on 33 minutes with a well-struck shot. Gorman scored again on 37 minutes with a rocket-shot from distance through a ruck of players. Iain MacLellan pulled a goal back for Skye with a superb solo effort on 39 minutes. MacLellan controlled a high ball into the edge of the D with his stick before lifting the ball over a defender and, without letting the ball hit the ground; he hit it over the goalie and into the net to make it 4-1. It was the Islanders only score but it was probably the pick of the afternoon’s goals. A David Cheyne strike on the hour mark confirmed Newtonmore’s 5-1 win. Cheyne’s initial effort was blocked but he tucked the rebound past Skye keeper Iain MacLeod - who was helpless for all five Newtonmore goals - from the edge of the D. Skye found it difficult to contain MacKenzie and Cheyne and the speedy ‘More wing forwards and it was a deserved win for the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup holders. Iain MacLeod, James Pringle, Ruaraidh MacLeod, Connor Gilpin and Chris MacLennan earned pass marks from the Skye camp. Newtonmore will now play the Kinlochshiel second team at Kirkton in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup quarter finals on Saturday 28 May 2016.
