Newtonmore 4 Skye Camanachd 2 | |
23 April 2023 The Skye Camanachd second team lost 4-2 to the Newtonmore second team in their Mowi North Division 1 match at the Eilan on Saturday 22 April 2023. Newtonmore boss Peter Ross fielded a strong seventeen-man squad, and they had Ritchie Irvine back after being with the first team whilst Drew MacDonald was included for the first time after suffering a serious knee injury and he started on a five-player bench. Skye manager Willie MacDonald was without captain David MacInnes, but Taylor Matheson was able to play. Brodie MacBean put ‘More ahead with a good strike on 32 minutes after being played in on the right by a well-weighted Glen MacKintosh pass. Skye almost grabbed a leveller on the stroke of half-time when there was a melee on the Newtonmore goal line but the home goal survived. Skye, now with the wind advantage, went into the second half with confidence but Glen MacKintosh’s quick-fire double on 47 and 52 minutes blew them away. Drew MacDonald came on for Newtonmore as a second half substitute and his shot was deflected into the Skye net off visiting defender Cameron MacKay’s club on 61 minutes to make it 4-0. Skye rallied though and youngsters Seonaidh-Alex MacLeod on 74 minutes and Alasdair Stewart on 85 minutes made it 4-2. Glen MacKintosh went close to completing his hat-trick near the end with a blistering volley that cannoned back off Skye keeper Calum Nicolson. Speaking afterwards, Willie MacDonald said: “There were lots of positives to take from the game and we didn’t actually play badly. We deservedly pulled a couple of goals back late in the match but if we had managed to do so 10 minutes earlier, it would have made for an interesting finish.” Newtonmore from: Jason MacDonald: Cameron McNiven, James Ross, Ross Haig, Rasmus Cheyne: Ritchie Irvine, Daniel Craven, Tristan Ross: Charlie Ferguson, Xander Ross, Brodie MacBean, Glen MacKintosh: subs Euan Dingwall, Kyle Clark, Drew MacDonald, Lewis MacKintosh, Alex Shearer Skye Camanachd from: Calum Nicolson: Cameron MacKay, Nui Nicolson, William James Sutherland, Raghnall Robertson: Charlie Latton, Seonaidh-Alex MacLeod, Ian MacPherson: Iain MacInnes, Ryan Nicolson, James Robertson, Taylor Matheson: subs Oliver Langlands, Alasdair Stewart Match Referee – James MacPherson |
