Memory Lane - 2000 / 2001 Shinty Season Part 14/20 | |
05 January 2016 As Skye Camanachd look forward to their first season in shinty’s top division since 2002, let’s look back to the 2000 / 01 season, Skye’s first year in the national top tier. The Islanders only spell in the National Premier Division came when they won promotion from the National League Division 1 after a final-day win over Lochcarron at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree at the end of the 1999 / 2000 season. Skye joined Fort William, Glenorchy, Kilmallie, Kingussie, Kyles Athletic Newtonmore and Oban Camanachd in an eight team top flight in hope of winning the championship but with a definite aim of avoiding finishing bottom of the table which would mean relegation. Skye welcomed Oban Camanachd to Pairc nan Laoch, Portree as they moved into the second set of league fixtures.
Saturday 31 March 2001 Marine Harvest National Premier Division Skye Camanachd 1 Oban Camanachd 2 Skye suffered a 2-1 defeat to third place Oban Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. The visitors went ahead on 11 minutes when Fraser Inglis managed to break free of the clutches of his marker to score. Skye drew level 5 minutes before the break thanks to a fine individual goal from Willie Cowie. The winning goal came on 62 minutes. Oban Camanachd’s Daniel MacIntyre picked out Fraser Inglis in space and he smashed the ball high into the net to make it 2-1. Despite running Oban Camanachd so close, Skye failed to pick up any points and they knew it was imperative that they took something from the following weekend’s encounter with fellow relegation battlers Glenorchy at Mart Park. |
