MacMaster Cup Win For Skye - Glenurquhart U14 1 Skye Camanachd U14 4 | |
20 May 2013 Skye Camanachd A U14 beat Glenurquhart U14 4-1 in their MacMaster Cup tie at Blairbeg on Friday 17 May 2013. Skye Youth Coaches John MacLeod and John Angus Gillies were without John MacInnes, Mathew Wood and Angus MacDonald for this 6.45pm throw up so Emma Gordon and Sandy Laing were called into the squad. None of the Primary 7 players were available because of the annual Edinburgh School Trip. Both sides had made a winning start to the season so a good tie was anticipated. Skye made a sluggish start to the game and they went a goal down after 7 minutes with the Glen’s Finlay Robertson on target. However the tie was all-square just 5 minutes later when Stewart Taylor finished from around 10 yards out. Skye pressed to get a first half advantage but Glen keeper Finlay Ralston, who is still Primary 7 age, twice saved well to deny Ruaraidh MacLeod on 24 minutes and 27 minutes. The Skye coaches delivered some harsh words to their young side at half time, and it was a more determined visiting side that turned around with the breeze at their backs. Stewart Taylor came close to putting Skye in front on 37 minutes with a low drive. Skye went in front for the first time in the game on 44 minutes when Ruaraidh MacLeod slotted ball past keeper Ralston to make it 2-1. Seconds later, Jack Henderson saved well with his feet in Skye goal. The action quickly switched to the other end on and a low Ruaraidh MacLeod strike from 18 yards flew into corner of the net to make it 3-1 on 45 minutes. The Skye centre line had taken control with John Gillies and James Pringle stamping their authority on the game, ably assisted by Anna Macdonald at wing centre. A super solo effort from Conor Ross sealed the game on 47 minutes when he slotted the ball home after beating three Glen defenders. Glenurquhart put in a spirited performance but some of their older players were below par on the night. Skye were delighted with the win and especially their second half performance. Their top performers on the night were Stewart Taylor, Marcus Ross and Ryan Morrison at full back but James Pringle shaded the man of the match accolade from John Gillies with outstanding performance, especially in the second half.
