MacMaster Cup Final - Oban Camanachd U14 3 Skye Camanachd U14 1 - UPDATED! | |
19 September 2014 Skye Camanachd U14 went down 3-1 to Oban Camanachd U14 in the MacMaster Cup Final at the Bught Park on Saturday 13 September 2014. This was a repeat of last year’s final in which Oban Camanachd emerged victorious. Ross Nicolson missed out for Skye with a broken thumb but he travelled with the squad. Jack Henderson, Emma Gordon and Anna MacDonald returned for the Islanders after missing the previous week’s draw against Kingussie. Skye beat Caberfeidh U14, Lochaber U14 and Kingussie 14 in this year’s competition with all ties played away from home. Daniel MacCuish, Lewis Buchanan and Craig MacMillan provided a real goal threat for the free-scoring Oban side and their squad was boosted by the inclusion of Ballachulish second team players Cameron Sutherland and Pat MacLean. They received an opening round bye and then beat Fort William U14 and Kinlochshiel U14 on their way to this year’s final. The teams were piped onto the field of play for this 11.30pm throw up in what was a warm, sunny day. Daniel MacCuish put Oban ahead on 15 minutes after Skye had failed to clear their lines following a looping shy from Pat MacLean on the Oban left. Daniel MacCuish got his and Oban Camanachd’s second with a great strike on 48 minutes. Ruaridh Horne won ball in midfield and found Scott Robertson on the Oban right. Robertson sent a high ball into the Skye goal area where Lewis Buchanan knocked the ball back to Daniel MacCuish who set a 25 yard shot high into the net to make it 2-0 Ruairidh MacLeod turned quickly and shot high into the net to give Skye hope on 54 minutes. MacLeod controlled a Conor Gilpin free-hit from his own half and the Skye full forward’s backhand gave Oban keeper Cameron Sutherland no chance. However there was to be no come-back as Pat MacLean restored Oban Camanachd’s two-goal cushion just 4 minutes later. MacLean put the ball into the top corner of the net following Lewis Buchanan’s knock-back. Skye tried hard to reduce the deficit but the Oban side saw out the remainder of the game to run out 3-1 winners. Oban Camanachd captain Craig Kilpatrick was presented with the Ken MacMaster Cup by Caberfeidh’s David MacMaster who donated the trophy to the Camanachd Association in 1992 to honour his father’s outstanding contribution to shinty both at Caberfeidh and with the Camanachd association, over many years.
