Lochaber Retain Ferguson Transport U14 North Area Inter District Trophy | |
01 September 2013 Lochaber retained the Ferguson Transport U14 North Area Inter District trophy following a great tournament at Spean Bridge on Sunday 25 August 2013.
Semi Final – Inverness 0 Skye & Wester Ross 1 The draw paired Skye and Wester Ross with Inverness area in the first semi final and referee Ronnie Campbell got the 50 minute match underway at noon. Play swung from end to end straight from the throw up and both teams proved themselves to be very evenly matched all over the pitch and the committed and skillful play on show set the tone for the day. Indeed the sides were so evenly matched that the game looked to be heading for a goalless draw, partly thanks to a fantastic save from Inverness goalkeeper Lee Dunbar, but just before the end of regulation time, Conor Ross struck for Skye and Wester Ross to send them into the final.
Semi Final - Badenoch & Strathspey 1 Lochaber 4 The second semi final paired Badenoch & Strathspey and Lochaber and this tie was finely poised but Badenoch struck first through Duncan Gorman. However Lochaber gradually came more in to the game and two goals apiece for Finlay MacDonald and Dean Williamson secured their place in the final.
Third / Fourth Place – Badenoch & Strathspey 4 Inverness 3 After a short break Badenoch took on Inverness area in the 3rd/4th place play off and this proved to be a classic game of two halves as Badenoch raced in to a 4 – 0 half time lead through Duncan Gorman, Ruaridh Anderson, Iain Robinson and Roddy Young. The second half however was a different story as Inverness hit back with strikes from Darren Douglas, Jamie MacLennan and Archie Wotherspoon but Badenoch held out for the win.
Final – Lochaber 2 Skye & Wester Ross 1 Lochaber area had the best of the opening exchanges in the final and just as it looked like Skye & Wester Ross were weathering the storm Finlay MacDonald struck for Lochaber to give them the half time advantage. When Dean Williamson doubled that lead early in the second half it looked all over but Skye & Wester Ross showed great grit and determination to fight back and when Conor Ross scored it was no more than they deserved. Skye & Wester Ross then laid siege to the Lochaber goal for the last few minutes, at one point forcing seven successive corners, but they could not find the equaliser thanks in part to some fine saves from Kyle Michie in the Lochaber goal. Ferguson Transport manager Mr Michael Oliver presented the shield to Lochaber for the second successive year and medals to all finalists. Seventeen clubs were represented at the tournament including Kinlochbervie, Strathspey and Lewis. After the final, the District coaches chose 16 players to represent the North against the South on the 29 September 2013 at Mossfield. The coaches of the two sides who contested the final, Duncan Kelly and John MacLeod, have been appointed to coach the North team in Oban.
