Lochaber High School Win 2016 Wade Cup | |
06 October 2016 Lochaber High School won the 2016 Wade Cup at the Dell on Wednesday 5 October 2016. The tournament took place on a bright and sunny day in Kingussie with Kingussie, Lochaber, Plockton and Glenurquhart secondary schools all playing eachother in 30 minute games in a round-robin format. All the league matches were closely contested and fiercely competitive. Kingussie topped the league on maximum points with Lochaber clinching second place so these teams went forward to the tournament final. The final saw Lochaber switch Kilmallie’s Callum MacDougal to full back to mark Kingussie’s danger-man Roddy Young. The first 15 minutes were closely contested but it was Lochaber that carved out the better chances and they had a goal disallowed midway through the half for an infringement on the edge of the box. The second half followed the same pattern with chances at both ends but it was Lochaber that made the all-important breakthrough with an excellent individual goal from Lewis Clark. Lochaber could have increased their lead minutes later when Victor Smith found himself in space at the back post but his snapshot hit the post and was cleared by the Kingussie defence. Kingussie pressed for an equaliser but Lochaber stood firm and thoroughly deserved their victory. Tommy Wade from Kingussie, who donated the trophy in 1974, presented Lochaber captain Callum MacDougall with the Wade Cup. |
