Lewis Camanachd 2 Skye Camanachd 7 | |
18 February 2013 The Skye Camanachd second team recorded a 7-2 win in their pre-season friendly against Lewis Camanachd at Shawbost on Saturday 16 February 2013. Lewis lost 3-2 to Lochbroom in the Cuach a’ Chuain Sgìth fixture in their last outing and Daniel Gallagher and Andrew MacDonald picked up knocks in that game. New Lewis Camanachd boss Iain Sinclair named a squad which included former Skye Camanachd players Eoghan Stewart and Tom Stewart. However Stuart Campbell was missing as were Scott Murray and Calum Stamper. Daniel Gallagher’s ankle injury meant he was unable to take up his usual position at full back so he started in goal in place of Connor MacDonald who was another absentee. This was the Skye reserves first pre-season outing after their friendly against Inverness was cancelled the previous weekend and they set off for Lewis on Saturday morning, returning home the following day. Skye Camanachd second team manager Murdo Morrison was missing a number of regular players and he was forced to start in goal with no other keeper available. Stewart Grant and Angus “Bruachie” MacDonald also travelled with the squad but didn’t play. There was a minutes’ silence ahead of the throw up in memory of Diane Morrison. The home side played with a strong wind at their backs in the first half but it was Skye who enjoyed plenty pressure up front without troubling keeper Gallagher. Skye eventually took the lead 10 minutes before the interval when substitute Ian MacPherson set up Magnus Burd and his shot deceived Daniel Gallagher and ended up in the net. Skye went 2-0 ahead almost straight from the throw up and this time it was John Angus MacInnes who fired home. When Iain MacLellan made it 3-0 early in the second half, Skye looked in control. However Lewis staged a fight-back and strikes from Will Church and Duncan MacIntyre reduced Skye’s lead to a single goal. However the visitors settled back into their rhythm and John Angus MacInnes got his second to make it 4-2. Iain MacLellan netted his second and Skye’s fifth and when David Grant, who had been pushed into attack to good effect, played in John Angus MacInnes, the big Skye forward completed his hat-trick to make it 6-2. David Grant helped himself to the final goal of the game to secure a 7-2 win. Lewis gave a good account of themselves and one spectacular volley from captain Paul Duke from just inside his own half dipped just over the Skye bar with keeper Morrison looking on anxiously. John Angus MacInnes was the pick of the Skye players. This was Skye’s only pre-season outing ahead of the start of the 2013 shinty season which they open with a trip to Lovat.
