Kyleakin Finish 2016 Gilmour Sports Shinty World Cup Runners Up | |
12 July 2016 South Skye Primary School Kyleakin finished 2016 Gilmour Sports Shinty World Cup runners up following the popular event at the Bught Park on Tuesday 28 June 2016. Skye were well represented at the tournament with Broadford / Elgol, Dunvegan, Kyleakin, Portree and Sleat all taking part. More than 300 primary school aged shinty players from the North of Scotland made up 42 teams and took part in three tournaments:
Kyleakin, coached by former Skye Camanachd player and ex-club secretary Keith MacKenzie, made a big impact for such a small school. They topped their league section unbeaten after defeating Newtonmore, Kirkhill and Glenurquhart as well as drawing with Inverlochy to reach the semi-finals. Portree Primary School also won their league section to reach the semi-finals where they eventually lost out to Newtonmore. Kyleakin beat Tarradale in their semi-final tie to set up a final against Newtonmore. However after losing to Kyleakin in the league stages, Newtonmore turned the tables to win the final and lift the trophy. Balnain, who hadn’t lost a game all day continued in that way by securing a victory over a very good Aviemore side in the Championship Final. Inverlochy, who had only dropped a single point all day, ran out winners in the Super Sixes final against an excellent Drakies side. Camanachd Association President Jim Barr presented medals to the winners and runners-up. Click on the link for a taste of the action Shinty World Cup |
