Kinlochshiel 1 Skye Camanachd 0 | |
07 March 2023 They had to work hard but Kinlochshiel eventually edged out their newly promoted neighbours Skye Camanachd 1-0 in a west coast derby at Rèaraig on Saturday 4 March 2023. New ‘Shiel boss Willie MacRae was without the injured John MacRae as well as Duncan “WD” MacRae who doesn’t return from abroad until the end of the month. There were places for Oliver MacRae and Jonnie MacAskill, both back from Glasgow Mid Argyll, with the latter starting on the bench. Skye boss Kenny MacLeod missed the injured Martin Pringle and James Morrison who had flu so Ross MacKinnon and Sam Macphee started in the wing back roles. John Gillies recovered from an ankle knock to play. It was a first half of few chances with Ross Gordon’s low shot, comfortably saved with his feet by ‘Shiel keeper Josh Grant, the only attempt on target. The closest ‘Shiel came to scoring was Jordan Fraser’s shot from a central position which rose over the junction between post and bar. The goal that made the difference came on 62 minutes. Donald Nixon’s measured ball forward picked out Keith MacRae on the right. MacRae had plenty to do but he spun inside, away from Sam Macphee, before playing a tantalising ball low across goal and an unmarked Jordan Fraser made no mistake at the back post. Skye came close to a leveller near the end when Kenny Cushnie’s snap-shot was heading for the top corner of the net but Josh Grant jumped to his left to tip the ball away. It got tousy towards the end, as derby matches are prone to do, but referee Graham Cameron kept control with the use of some yellow cards. The best players were at the back with John Gillies Skye’s man of the match, closely followed by William MacKinnon. Young Ross Nicolson made an early substitute appearance, and he can be pleased with his contribution.
