Kingussie & Kyles Athletic Remember Their WW1 Heroes | |
02 April 2014 The Orion Group Premiership match between Kingussie and Kyles Athletic at the Dell on Saturday 5 April 2014 is sure to be poignant affair. The match takes place exactly 100 years and one day after the two clubs met in the 1914 Camanachd Cup Final in Glasgow, which turned out to be the last match some players from both teams ever played. The 1914 Camanachd Cup Final took place on 4 April 1914 at Possil Park, Glasgow, with Kingussie beating Kyles Athletic 6-1. The match, which was refereed by Mr MacPherson, was played in the morning so that the spectators had time to get to Hampden Park for the annual football international between Scotland and England. MacGillvray (captain), J. MacIntosh Kyles athletic from: D. MacFadyen, Ce. Nicolson, Ca. Nicolson, R. Thomson, N. Macgilp, A. Macfadyen, W. Jamieson, J A. Gemmel (captain), G. Nicolson, C. Mackeller, D. Weir, W. Brown Just four months later, Word War 1 began and six Kingussie players and three Kyles Athletic players from that final lost their lives in the conflict. The nine players who gave their lives in WW1 were: L. Macpherson, J.G. Macpherson, W. Macgillvray, A.Tolmie, M. Macintosh, J. Macpherson (didn’t play in Final due to injury) Ce. Nicolson, W. Jamieson and W. Brown. Willie Macgillvray and John Macpherson lost their lives in 1915 at Festubert fighting alongside the Portree boys as told in Neil Oliver’s recent television programme.
