Ireland Shinty / Hurling Star Brendan Maher To Captain Tipperary | |
31 October 2013 The Tipperary County Board has announced that Ireland Shinty / Hurling star Brendan Maher will captain Tipperary next season. Maher wore the number 10 shirt and played a prominent role as Ireland took a 3-1 series lead with a 24-18 win over Scotland in the first test at Croke Park on Saturday 26 October 2013. 24 year old Maher, who was Tipperary vice-captain in 2013, plays for the Borris-Ileigh club and he made a winning senior inter-county debut for Tipperary against Waterford in the 2009 Waterford Crystal Cup. He made his National Hurling League debut for Tipperary against Cork in February 2009 and his Championship debut as a substitute against Cork in the 2009 Munster Senior Hurling Championship. He was an ever present in the 2010 All-Ireland Championship, helping Tipperary to capture the All-Ireland title whilst scoring two points from play in the final. Maher played for the Tipperary minor hurlers for three years, winning two All-Ireland minor medals in 2006 and in 2007 (as captain). He also won a Munster Minor Hurling medal in 2007 and three Munster senior medals in 2009, 2011 and 2012. He lined out with the Tipperary U21s in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, winning Munster medals in 2008 and 2010. An All-Star award followed for his midfield performances in 2010 as did the 2010 Young Hurler of the Year award and a shortlisting for the 2010 Bord Gais Energy Breaking Through Player of the Year award. Mayer was in the Munster side which won the Inter-Provincial Championship in 2012 and again in 2013 when he captained the side. |
