The Glasgow Celtic Society will once again honour the winning team from 50 years ago at the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final between Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic which takes place at the Taynuilt Sports Field on Saturday 27 June 2015.
The Glasgow Celtic Society Final 50 years ago was between Kyles Athletic and Glasgow Mid Argyll and the match was played at Kilmardinny on 8 May 1965. Jimmy Tait was the match referee.
The Glasgow Herald reported:
Kyles Athletic on Saturday won the Glasgow Celtic Society cup and in the process retained their unbeaten record this season when they easily defeated Glasgow Mid-Argyll 5-0 in the final at Kilmardinny.
The winning of the toss had a tremendous bearing on the eventual result. Mid-Argyll were set to face a high wind which sapped their strength and in the first 20 minutes Kyles, playing at their best, scored three times through Blair (2), a forward of outstanding ability, and Nicolson. In the second half Kyles eased off against a disappointing Mid-Argyll team and were content to coast to victory.
Mid-Argyll made several positional changes in the second half, but to no avail. Kyles were always quicker to the ball and made excellent use of the open spaces and were ready to take advantage of any error by their opponents.
A defensive blunder allowed Blair to score his own third and Kyles fourth, and a fine goal by Shaw after he outstripped the Mid-Argyll defence, completed the scoring.
In a well-balanced Kyles team, who on Saturday meet Kilmallie in the Camanachd Cup final at Oban, Black, Jamieson and Blair were outstanding. For Mid-Argyll only MacNiven, Turner and MacIntyre played to form.
Scorers:
Kyles Athletic: Neil Blair (3), Tom Nicolson
Glasgow Mid Argyll: Donald Shaw
The teams that day were as follows:
Kyles Athletic from: Bobby Nicolson, Alasdair MacRae, Roddy Carswell, Charlie Black, Chic Jamieson, Jim Jamieson, Alastair Chambers, Kerr Crawford, Stuart Davidson, Neil Blair, Tom Nicolson, Donald Shaw
Glasgow Mid Argyll from: Angus Ferguson, Iain MacIntosh, John MacMillan, Alastair Currie, Iain Cameron, Kenny MacNiven, Donald Skinner, Donnie MacNiven, Alistair Turner, Iain MacIntyre, Eoghan MacLellan, Duncan Cameron
Kyles were unbeaten at that point in the season and they won the Camanachd Cup the following week with a 4-1 victory over Kilmallie at Mossfield. They didn’t win the Macaulay Cup and that would be there only loss that season.
The photo of the triumphant Kyles Athletic team was taken at Tighnabruaich and the trophies are the Dunn League Cup, the Camanachd Cup and the Celtic Society Cup.
