Glasgow Mid Argyll Ladies 5 Skye Camanachd Ladies 0 | |
17 March 2014 The Skye Camanachd Ladies went down 5-0 to Glasgow Mid Argyll Ladies in their Marine Harvest National Division 1 match at Yoker on Saturday 15 March 2014. The sides met in last season’s Valerie Fraser Cup semi finals when GMA were convincing 11-0 winners. This meeting would allow Skye the chance to gauge how much they have progressed in the intervening period. Skye lost their opening league game 2-1 to Badenoch & Strathspey a fortnight ago whilst Aberdour were surprise 2-1 winners over GMA so both sides were looking for their first league points. Skye captain Roz Lamond missed out through work commitments and Anna MacDonald and Kirsty Dibble were also absentees. However Catriona Gibb returned to the squad as did Helen Lamond. Nicole MacRae was a late call-off after picking up a wrist injury in training. This 1pm throw up was always going to be a tough challenge for the Skye Ladies against last year’s champions GMA who included Joan Nicolson, who is originally from Skye, in their squad. Skye started well and both teams had chances during the early stages of the game. Joan Nicolson and Katie Drain both went close for GMA whilst Skye pair Nicola MacSween and Lorna MacRae both had shots that were just wide of the mark. Joan Nicolson was making dangerous runs at Skye's defence and she scored two goals in quick succession in the half hour mark to put GMA 2-0 ahead. Skye then suffered a blow with an injury to defender Ilana Paterson which meant she had to be replaced. It later transpired that the North U18 player had broken her middle finger and a bone in her hand and she will now be missing for several weeks. Joan Nicolson completed her hat-trick just before the break with her shot taking a deflection off Skye defender Caitlin Maclean. The second half saw Skye battle back at GMA and they put up a great fight but were unable to reduce the deficit. GMA’s experience proved too much for the Islanders and Skye’s opportunities at goal were limited. Joan Nicolson bagged her fourth goal following another daring run through the Skye defence to make it 4-0. Katie Drain scored GMA's fifth with a superb first time shot, hit with her back to goal, which made it 5-0. The Skye Ladies next outing is a meeting with Glengarry Ladies at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 29 March 2014. There were two other matches in the Marine Harvest National Division 1 on Sunday 16 March 2014. Lochaber drew 2-2 with Aberdour at Spean Bridge whilst Badenoch & Strathspey top the table following a 3-1 win over Glengarry at the Dell.
