Fort William Win 2014 Annual Jock Paul MacKintosh Veterans Sixes | |
18 August 2014 Fort William won the 2014 Annual Jock Paul MacKintosh Veterans Sixes which took place at the Eilan on Sunday 17 August 2014. All participants for this popular competition must be 40 years old or over and no longer playing competitive shinty. The ten teams were split into two sections with Glasgow Mid Argyll, Inveraray, Kingussie, Lochaber & The Referees in one section and Caberfeidh, Fort William, Kilmallie, Lovat and Newtonmore in the second group. This tournament always throws some amusing moments – who can forget Norman MacArthur playing in a Kingussie shirt in a previous year – and this year was no different. Lovat boss Allan MacRae turned a couple of heads when he appeared in a Newtonmore strip and came on as a substitute to score the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Lovat and Camanachd Association referee Innes Wood was sent off by former ref John Henderson whilst playing for the Referees’ Team. Lochaber edged out Kilmallie 1-0 in the semi-finals whilst Fort William overcame Kingussie 2-0 in their last four clash. Victor Smith and Willie MacDonald got the Fort goals. The final, which was refereed by John Sloggie, was played in heavy rain but that didn’t defer the supporters who had been treated to an entertaining afternoon’s shinty. Fort William eventually beat Lochaber 2-1 to lift the trophy. Ally Ferguson was on target for the Spean Bridge side but goals from Victor Smith and Willie MacDonald won the day for Fort William. Fort William’s John MacLeod was named player of the tournament.
