Fort William 2 Skye Camanachd 4 - UPDATED! | |
02 August 2013 Skye Camanachd beat Fort William 4-2 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 meeting at An Aird on Friday 2 August 2013. Donnie Martin took charge of the Skye side for this 7.15pm throw up and he was without the services of his captain David Grant who served a one match ban for a points accumulation. Jamie Gannon, Paul MacKinnon and Allan MacLeod were also missing. Ross Graham took over from Jamie Gannon in goal and Jordan Murchison, Will Cowie, Ally MacDonald, Neil John Campbell, Gilleasbuig MacDonald, and U17 player Stephen Murchison were called into the squad. The match was brought forward 24 hours to allow the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup semi final between Kingussie and Kyles Athletic to go ahead at the same venue the following day, ahead of the Orion Group Premiership meeting between Fort William and Glenurquhart. Skye started brightly and home keeper Garry MacKay made two great saves to deny Jordan Murchison in the opening minutes. Skye kept up the pressure and they took the lead after 3 minutes. Angie MacDonald found Iain MacLellan on the right and MacLellan slotted the ball home to make it 1-0. Iain MacLellan got his and Skye’s second on 36 minutes. It was a similar goal to the opener, if perhaps from a little further out. However Fort William fought back and Alan Knox reduced the deficit after 28 minutes to make it 2-1 with a shot from 15 yards out. Fort William drew level a minute before the break when David Duncan hit a low shot into the corner of the net to make it 2-2 at the interval. Skye manager Donnie Martin replaced David MacInnes with Stephen Murchison early in the second half with Magnus Burd dropping back into defence. Skye regrouped and they started to take control of the game from the hour mark. The Islanders went back in front on 67 minutes as Will Cowie finished off a fine move involving Jordan Murchison and Iain MacLellan when he shot home from the edge of the D to put his side 3-2 to the good. Jordan Murchison scored just 3 minutes later to seal the points. There was more good link up play from the Skye forwards and Murchison looked to have missed the chance to shoot but he cut the ball back before sending a blistering drive into the top corner of the net to make it 4-2. Fort William came back at Skye in the last quarter of the game but the visiting defence, led by full back Andrew Banks, stood firm although they did have keeper Ross Graham to thank for a couple of excellent saves. Thomas Wilson replaced John Angus MacInnes for Skye with around 10 minutes remaining. Gilleasbuig MacDonald came on in place of Angie MacDonald just 4 minutes from time with Ally MacDonald moving to full forward. Ally MacDonald battled hard for Skye in the full centre role against a good opponent. Skye remain third in the table behind Lovat and leaders Newtonmore.
