Fort William 2 Skye Camanachd 0 | |
05 August 2018 The Skye Camanachd second team lost 2-0 to the Fort William second team in their Strathdearn Cup semi-final tie at An Aird on Saturday 4 August 2018. Skye Camanachd second team manager Kenny MacLeod made seven changes from the squad which played the Newtonmore second team in the league the previous week and there were first appearances at this level for Lorna MacRae and Caitlin MacLean. Indeed Lorna MacRae started in attack, the first ladies player to play for the Islanders at second team level since Sarah Corrigall around 10 years ago. Caitlin MacLean was on the bench. And Lorna MacRae didn’t look out of place as she joined Ruaraidh MacLeod and Ross Gordon in threatening the Fort William goal. Fort William’s opener came 4 minutes from the break when, against the run of play, some confusion in the Skye defence allowed Grant Disher to gather the ball all in space at the back post and he finished with a hard, low shot into the net. Fort William got a grip of the centre line in the second half and they now created the bulk of the chances. Grant Disher got his and Fort William’s second on 63 minutes. The goal came following a corner which the Skye defence didn’t deal with and Disher looped the ball in from 20 yards out and it dipped just under the crossbar. Skye brought on Caitlin MacLean for her second team debut with 15 minutes to go. Skye’s Sam MacPhee played for an hour with a broken finger and the visitors lost Jamie MacKay through injury, having to reshuffle with no defenders remaining on the bench. There were good performances in the Skye defence where full back John Angus MacInnes and buckshee back Martin Pringle were ably assisted by wing backs Jamie Gillies and Jamie MacKay. Chris Rose showed his experience for long parts of the game and Ross Gordon, Ruaraidh MacLeod Stewart Taylor and Lorna MacRae played some really nice stuff but the lack of an end product was their downfall. Skye have now reached four semi-finals over the last three seasons but have been unable to reach the final on each occasion. The Fort William second team will now play the Newtonmore second team in next month’s Strathdearn Cup Final.
