Five Years Of Support For Shinty In Oban | |
14 February 2017 The future of shinty in the Oban area received a boost when the Oban Area Development Group secured a £5,000 grant from the Heart of the Community Trust, supported by Scottish Sea Farms. The monies will be released over a five year period and will help safe-guard the future of primary school shinty tournaments. Euan McMurdo, secretary of the group, said, “We are delighted to receive this cash from the Heart of the Community Fund as it will let us hire venues like the Atlantis Centre in Oban and other halls for indoor practice and tournaments. The money will also be used to purchase medals and equipment and we are really grateful to Scottish Sea Farms for helping us keep the sport of shinty growing in Scotland.” McMurdo added, “Anyone who wishes to get involved in playing shinty in the Oban area should get in touch with their primary school or one of the local clubs in or around Oban. With the indoor season finishing, the primary school competitions will now move outside, hosting festivals from April until September. Approximately 140 primary aged children currently attend each festival which demonstrates the popularity and fun with getting involved in shinty.” Georgie McKenzie, SSF representative said, “We understand that there is a growing interest in the sport and we are happy that our Heart of the Community fund can help youngsters stay active and get involved with a sport they enjoy.” |
