Bute Primaries Win 2016 MacKay Cup | |
04 July 2016 The Bute Primaries beat Newtonmore Primary School 3-2 to win the 2016 MacKay Cup at An Aird on Saturday 25 June 2016. Bute Primaries suffered three late call offs on Saturday morning and had to travel to Fort William with just twelve players, including Primary 1 player Louie McDonald. Bute started on top and they took a 2-0 lead. Leon McMillan got the opener on 12 minutes and Rory McDonald doubled their advantage on 25 minutes. Newtonmore responded by dominating the start of the second half and they drew level through goals from captain Zander Ross on 36 minutes and Iain Fraser on 56 minutes. The game ebbed and flowed after this with the clinching score coming from Leon McMillan in 62 minutes. The Newtonmore players gave their all until the end but they could not snatch an equaliser. Donnie MacLean, Past President of the Schools Camanachd Association, presented the medals to both teams and the MacKay Cup to Bute captain Marcus Plank. The Anne Cameron Quaich for Player of the Match was presented to Bute Primaries’ Marcus Plank by Anne’s daughter Catherine Anne MacGregor.
