03 June 2014 Skye Camanachd are through to the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter finals after they beat Bute 3-0 at the Meadows on Saturday 31 May 2014 Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Skye travelled south on the Friday evening – with the exception of Jamie Gannon and Chris Rose who journeyed on the day - for this second round tie against the Marine Harvest National Division side. The teams last met in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup first round in 2011 when a Robert Walker hat-trick helped Bute to a 6-1 win on Rothesay. Skye were bidding to reach the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter finals once again, having lost out to eventual winners Kyles Athletic at the 2012 quarter final stage. Neil MacVicar missed out again for Skye because of injury. Kenny MacLeod was also unavailable as he was at a stag party and although Jordan Murchison was named as a substitute, he was not fully fit. Iain MacLellan was called into the squad by boss John MacLeod and keeper Jamie Gannon returned in goal in place of Aonghas MacDonald. Bute, with the help of the local fire brigade, had been working hard throughout Friday to remove surface water from their pitch after a blocked drain caused a problem. There was an 8am Saturday morning pitch inspection and the Meadows was deemed playable although Glasgow Mid Argyll’s Yoker pitch had been placed on stand-by should there have been any problem. Bute fielded a strong side which included the return of Robert Walker for the first time this season and he started on the bench. The pitch was understandably heavy on what was a very hot day. Bute keeper Kevin Queen was called into action in the opening minute when he turned a shot round the post. Queen was involved again on 5 minutes when he saved an Allan MacKinnon shot. Skye took the lead on 7 minutes when Bute struggled to clear a Gilleasbuig MacDonald corner. Shockie MacLennan gathered possession and he found some space on the right before firing a low backhand shot past the keeper to make it 1-0. Skye continued to press and Danny Morrison shot wide on 9 minutes. A long range effort from Bute centre James Craig forced Jamie Gannon into action on 13 minutes. Great lead up play from Allan Mackinnon on 18 minutes enabled Shockie MacLennan to get a shot away but his effort went just past the post. Kenny Campbell made it 2-0 on 25 minutes when he collected a Will Cowie pass and sent a fine low shot into the net from 15 yards. A great solo run from Shockie MacLennan on the half hour mark took him past three defenders but keeper Queen got the last touch to clear the danger. Skye ended a satisfactory first half two goals to the good. Danny Morrison had a shot saved by Kevin Queen with the second half just a minute old Jamie Gannon saved with feet from John MacCallum on 49 minutes. Kevin Queen saved with his feet on 57 minutes as Skye kept the pressure on and a Will Cowie shot from distance went over the bar a minute later. Kenny Campbell put the ball past the post on 66 minutes. Skye’s superior fitness was telling and they extended their lead on 73 minutes when Shockie MacLennan produced a smart finish from 15 yards after some creative play from Will Cowie and Kenny Campbell. Bute had the chance to get back in the game on 78 minutes when referee David Mitchell awarded them a penalty after Skye defender Ally MacDonald was adjudged to have kicked the ball inside the D. However Jamie Gannon saved the resultant spot-hit from substitute Robert Walker with his feet. Skye made changes on 79 minutes with Iain Murray being replaced by David Grant. The resultant reshuffle saw Grant go to full forward, Kenny Campbell to wing centre and Gibbs MacDonald to full centre. Skye made an enforced change on 81 minutes when Ally MacDonald left the pitch with a shoulder injury. Shockie MacLennan moved back to defence and Iain MacLellan came on in the forward line. Iain MacLellan was immediately in the thick of the action and he shot over a couple of minutes later. Bute were reduced to eleven players when defender Brian Liddell was shown a second yellow card and sent from the field of play. With 5 minutes remaining, Iain Murray came back on to join the forward line with Danny Morrison withdrawn. Referee Mitchell awarded a second penalty – this time to Skye – when a Bute defender kicked the ball inside the D. However Kevin Queen saved Will Cowie’s injury time spot-hit. Best for Skye were keeper Jamie Gannon and Steven Morrison in defence. The centre line of Gilleasbuig MacDonald, Iain Murray and Allan MacKinnon did well in difficult underfoot conditions whilst up front, Kenny Campbell, Shockie MacLennan and Danny Morrison caused problems for the Bute defence.
