Alasdair Morrison, Portree | |
07 April 2020 All at Skye Camanachd were sorry to hear of the passing of one of our former players, Alasdair Morrison, Portree on Monday 6 April 2020. Alasdair Morrison, or Ally Mor as he was better known, was born in November 1950 so would have been 70 this year. He broke into the Skye Camanachd squad in the early 1970s and forged a reputation as a determined wing back. It was a good season for the Islanders as they reached the 1971 Sutherland Cup Final when they lost 2-0 to a very goodBallachulish side at theBught Park,Inverness. The squad that day was: Donald MacLeod, Ian MacDougall, Alasdair Morrison, Sammy Gordon, Alasdair MacKinnon, Richard Stoddart, Willie MacPherson (captain), Laurie MacIntyre, Colin Murchison, Andy MacPherson, Calum Beaton, Peter MacKinnon Ally’s father, the irrepressible Ewen Morrison, used his mini bus to take the team to and from matches during the 1970s. Ally would take a turn at the wheel and indeed took on some driving duties after his father passed away. The Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup is played in Ewen Morrison’s memory and, in its current format, is contested between North Skye and South Skye. Ally would attend these games when he could; at times presenting the trophy. His mother Katie Ann was also a keen supporter of the club and would always be involved at fund raising events. Indeed the family connection continues to this day as Ally’s cousin Chrisanne MacDonald is a member of the current Skye Camanachd Board. Ally passed away on Monday morning and Skye Camanachd sends sympathies to Ally’s son Ewen, daughter Jennifer and brother Angus who lives in Kent and indeed the extended family. The current restrictions mean there will be a private funeral. (Photograph: Ally Morrison is sixth from the left in the back row of this 1974 Thomas Ferguson Memorial Cup match picture) |
