Aberdeen University 2 Skye Camanachd 4 | |
28 August 2013 Skye Camanachd came from two goals down to beat Aberdeen University 4-2 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 meeting at Balgownie on Saturday 24 August 2013. Skye Camanachd second team manager Murdo Morrison was unavailable so captain David Grant and senior player Angie MacDonald looked after the side. They were without suspended duo David MacInnes, who started a two match ban following his red card against Glengarry, and Andrew Banks, who served a one game ban for a points accumulation. David Grant returned to the side at full back as did do defender DJ Gilpin and forwards Paul MacKinnon and Jordan Murchison. There was a place for Ally "Burgers" MacLeod and U17 keeper Raymond Gillies was in goal, making him the seventh goalkeeper to represent the Islanders first and second teams this season. Aberdeen had a doubt over player / manager Jamie Beaton who had been unwell but he started at full forward. The Students were bottom of the table, level on points with Kinlochshiel and Glengarry, going into the match and this was their final league fixture of the season. It was the home side who went in front when Mark Fraser steered the ball into the Skye net on 17 minutes Skye created several first half chances but they found Aberdeen keeper Paul Connelly in fine form and one excellent stop from Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod particularly caught the eye. The Students could have doubled their advantage when a Jamie Beaton snap-shot came off the Skye post. John Sweeney produced a great finish to beat Skye keeper Raymond Gillies and make it 2-0 just 10 minutes into the second half. And that’s the way it stayed until 13 minutes from time when Jordan Murchison collected the ball around the penalty spot and he fired in a shoulder height rocket shot which gave keeper Paul Connolly’s no chance. Jordan Murchison grabbed a second just a couple of minutes later when he scored an almost identical goal to level the game at 2-2. Angie MacDonald put Skye in front for the first time in the match on 85 minutes. MacDonald won a challenge with Aberdeen full back David Fraser and he lifted the ball into the roof of the net to make it 3-2. Angie MacDonald was then replaced by Jenna Beaton who became the second ladies player, after Sarah Corrigall, to represent Skye at senior level. Paul MacKinnon sealed the win when he prodded the ball home following a goalmouth scramble just a minute from time. Best for Skye were full back David Grant, full centre Ally MacDonald and wing centre Paul MacKinnon who must have covered every blade of grass for the cause. Skye left Jack Latton on the bench. He is awaiting an operation on his injured shoulder and it is to his great credit that he made the long journey to Aberdeen, with the team being short of players, although he was not filly fit. Skye will finish off the season with a trip to the Eilan to play Newtonmore next weekend and they complete their league programme with a home derby against Kinlochshiel the week after.
