27 March 2018 The Skye Camanachd reserves leap-frog Aberdeen University to go second in the table following their impressive 4-0 victory over The Students at Balgownie on Saturday 24 March 2018. Skye manager Kenny MacLeod had Iain Murray back and he started at full back. However with keeper and captain Ryan Morrison on first team duty, Murphy Henderson played in goal. Ally “Spod” MacLeod, Ruaraidh MacLeod and Connor Gilpin were also with the senior side. Steven Morrison was injured but there was a first selection for Marcus Scott, Chris Rose returned after a three year absence and Angus MacDonald came in at full forward. Throw up was at 2.30pm and the surface at Balgownie was soft. Skye created several chances with all four forwards – Martin Pringle, Ross Gordon, Daniel Morrison and Angie MacDonald – going close before Martin Pringle gave them a 27 minute lead with a superb low shot from outside the D. Ross Gordon added a second on 36 minutes after some good Skye pressing. Chris Rose came off the bench in place of Angie MacDonald just before the end of the first half and he made it 3-0 just 3 minutes into the second half when he drilled a low shot into the net after Aberdeen keeper Willie Hunter had made a save. The pitch started to cut up and fitness became a factor and it was Skye who kicked on. Skye introduced Marcus Scott, making a return to shinty after a 20 year absence, and he almost grabbed a debut goal but his long range effort went just over the bar. Skye’s movement and one-touch passing stretched the Aberdeen defence and the Skye forwards combined to set up Ross Gordon for his second goal of the afternoon on 60 minutes. David Grant came off the bench and went to full back. Iain Murray moved to full centre with John Angus MacInnes withdrawn. It wasn’t Aberdeen’s day and former Skye player Jamie Beaton had a chance to pull a goal back when he got free in the box but Murphy Henderson made an outstanding save with his hand from Beaton’s rocket-shot before clearing the danger. This was an excellent Skye team performance and they deserved the win. Brothers John Angus MacInnes and David MacInnes were physically strong and they ran the midfield along with the tireless Ian MacPherson. Next up for Skye is a trip to An Aird to play the Fort William second team in Marine Harvest North Division 1 on Saturday 31 March 2018.
