2015 Balliemore Cup Final ………….. 1 Day To Go! | |
17 July 2015 It’s almost time for the 2015 Balliemore Cup Final between Glasgow Mid Argyll and Beauly at the Dell on Saturday 18 July 2015. Neither side has won this intermediate trophy. The closet Glasgow Mid Argyll have come to a success was in 2000 when they drew 3-3 with Caberfeidh after extra-time before eventually losing 3-2 to the Castle Leod side on penalties. Beauly have appeared in three previous finals – losing 2-1 to Bute in 2006, losing 5-1 to Lochaber in 2012 and losing 4-2 to Bute again a year later. The sides have met once already this season with GMA coming out on top following a feisty meeting at Yoker: Marine Harvest National Division Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Beauly 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll took the points and Beauly tasted league defeat for the first time this season at Paterson Park, Yoker. Beauly’s Colin MacDonald was ruled out with a hand injury but full back Jamie MacLennan and attacker Sean Stewart were back in the side. Stewart returned after suffering a broken nose and receiving eleven stiches in the win over Ballachulish and he lined up wearing a helmet. GMA took the lead from a shy from the left after 22 minutes. The ball came to the back post and Craig Anderson hit it across the keeper into the top left corner of the net. Marc MacLachlan made it 1-1 on the hour mark when he despatched the ball into the back of the net from the left of the D. Craig Anderson had scored three times midweek as Strathclyde University lifted the Littlejohn Vase and he got his second goal of this match on 70 minutes when the ball came out to him outside the D and he hit it low into the net, through a whole load ruck of players, past and unsighted Josh Grant in the Beauly goal. Mark Bain sealed the win a couple of minutes later when he collected possession at the D which left him one-on-one with keeper Grant and Bain flicked the ball into the top corner of the net to make it 3-1. Beauly’s Sean Stewart was sent off by referee David Mitchell with around 7 minutes remaining.

His role in defence will be crucial if GMA are to keep Marc MacLachlan and Co at bay. Mark Bain – With Craig Anderson a long-term injury casualty, GMA have relied on Mark Bain’s scoring prowess. Bain has netted six times this season including a penalty strike against Inveraray last Saturday. Ban Dalgety – The former Lochcarron players has scored some important goals for the side this season, especially in recent weeks, and he has the versatility to play in a number of positions.
Players to Watch – Beauly Conor Cormack – The Scotland cap plays a pivotal role for Beauly, marshalling the Greens’ defence from the buckshee back position. He is a clean hitter and a positive influence on the team. David MacLean – The Beauly full centre likes to push forward and has an eye for goal. He is a talented player who will look to dominate the middle of the park. Marc MacLachlan – The former Ballachulish and Strathglass player has made the full forward position his own and he is the team’s top scorer with 14 goals.
