2013 Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final …………. 5 Days To Go! | |
10 June 2013 The 2013 Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final between Glenurquhart and Lovat takes place at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 15 June 2013. Glenurquhart are current Artemis Macaulay Cup holders and their co-manager Drew Mcneil also enjoyed cup Camanachd Cup success whilst in charge at Fort William. Indeed he has ended up on the losing side as a manager in any of his previous cup finals. The first round of the Co-operative MacTavish Cup took place back on Saturday 30 March 2013 and Glenurquhart’s route to the final had a straightforward beginning when they were given a first round bye to the quarter final stage. Thereafter it got more difficult.
Saturday 20 April 2013 Co-operative MacTavish Cup - Quarter Finals Glenurquhart 3 Kinlochshiel 2 Glenurquhart were certainly tested at the quarter final stage before they eventually ran out 3-2 winners against Kinlochshiel at Blairbeg. An early double from Fraser Heath after 11 and 16 minutes gave the home side the advantage which they took into the break. Kinlochshiel’s Finlay MacRae started on the bench as he was hampered by a hamstring injury. However manager Johnston Gill was forced to introduce MacRae to snuff out the threat posed by Fraser Heath. ‘Shiel’s Oliver MacRae pulled a goal back after 53 minutes only for Neale Reid to restore the Glen’s tow goal cushion just 3 minutes later. A Gordie MacDonald strike after 72 minutes ensured a tense finish but it is Glenurquhart who progressed to meet Newtonmore in the last four of the competition.
Saturday 18 May 2013 Co-operative MacTavish Cup - Semi Finals Newtonmore 1 Glenurquhart 2 Glenurquhart knocked holders Newtonmore of this year’s competition with a 2-1 semi-final win in their 3pm throw up at the Eilan. After a goalless first half, the opening goal came on the hour mark when the ball dropped to David Smart in a central position, around 20 yards from goal, and he fired the ball hard and low past Michael Ritchie to make it 1-0. The Glen were on top when Newtonmore equalised on 72 minutes as the ball was played wide to Glen Mackintosh who slipped it past Stuart Mackintosh to make it 1-1. The visitors were dealt a blow when Neale Reid had to come off with a tight calf but his replacement, Liam Girvan, made a real difference when he came on. Girvan was immediately involved in the action and on 77 minutes, he fought very hard to retain possession wide on the Glen left before releasing the ball down the line to David Smart who slipped it across field to the on-rushing Ewan Brady who beat team-mate Fraser Heath to the ball before flicking it past Ritchie for the winner. This was an end to end tie but the Glen, with John Barr and Andrew Corrigan excellent in defence, did enough deserve their place in the final. Colin MacDonald was the match referee.
