Clubs To Snub Camanachd Association AGM | |
25 April 2013 Skye Camanachd, Kingussie, Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore are amongst a number of clubs who will not attend this week’s Camanachd Association’s Annual General Meeting. The clubs have decided to stay away to show their displeasure at the way some Camanachd Association directors have handled a request from Skye Camanachd to have their proposal on league reconstruction heard and voted on at the Camanachd Association AGM. Skye’s proposal is that the plan to adopt a national first division for the 2014 season be withdrawn, and the current league model - which includes a ten team premiership with its existing system of promotion and relegation — be retained. The board of directors met on Tuesday 9 April 2013 and refused this request which forced Skye to call EGM, backed by Kingussie, Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore amongst others. Skye realised that there were two possible outcomes from that meeting: that the proposal was allowed to be heard and voted on at the AGM or that it was not allowed to be heard which would force the club to call an EGM. They were concerned that the latter outcome would lead to this matter dragging on for a further number of weeks where a swift resolution would be in everyone’s interests. Therefore Skye also made a properly submitted request for an EGM ahead of the board of directors meeting on Tuesday 9 April 2013. They did this so that should an EGM be the route they had to follow, the EGM could take place immediately before or following the AGM on Friday 26 April 2013. This would bring the matter to a swift conclusion and have the added advantage of only asking member clubs to gather on one evening, saving everyone time and expense. However this EGM request was not even acknowledged in the statement posted on the association’s website the day after the board meeting and the club were then asked to resubmit their request for an EGM. This was duly done so as not to lose focus on the main issue here which is the proposed league reconstruction. A Skye Camanachd spokesman said, “Our preference was that this matter was discussed and voted on at the Camanachd Association’s AGM. However this was not to be so we have been forced down the EGM route. We feel that this is the correct thing to do for the good of the sport and we also have a responsibility to other member clubs given the support we have received.” The spokesman added, “We suggested that the EGM should take place immediately before or following the AGM on Friday 26 April 2013 as a swift resolution is in everyone’s interests. Instead the board of directors have allotted time following the AGM to allow Members attending to discuss solutions to the concerns raised about the current league structure. This will delay the EGM into May and we feel that some directors have totally misjudged the mood of the clubs on this matter.” The Camanachd Association has 21 days to respond to Skye Camanachd’s request for an EGM. |
