The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 14 May 2011 - UPDATED! | |
18 May 2011 Kingussie will meet Fort William in the Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final and its Kyles Athletic versus Oban Camanachd in the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final following the semi final ties on Saturday 14 May 2011. Co-operative MacTavish Cup - Semi Finals Holders Kingussie eventually ran out 4-3 winners against 2010 runners-up Kilmallie in their 12.30pm throw up at the Dell. Kingussie manager Stevie Borthwick had Iain Borthwick and Paul Gow available again which boosted his selection options. Kilmallie’s John Stewart led their attack. There was no quarter asked in this clash and Kilmallie had a great chance to go in front after 10 minutes when they were awarded a penalty. However Kings’ keeper Andrew Borthwick saved the spot-hit. Kilmallie also hit the frame of the goal but it was the home side who drew first blood when Ronald Ross put them ahead after 28 minutes. The Kingussie captain then scored his second 6 minutes later and his side took this 2-0 lead into the break. The King’s lost Iain Borthwick to injury at half time and they missed his influence as the second half wore on. Kilmallie were never out of the contest though and they pulled a goal back on 57 minutes when Michael Rodger beat Andrew Borthwick to make it 2-1. However when Ross completed his hat-trick 5 minutes later when he jinked left and right to make enough space to fire into the net. When Thomas Borthwick netted on 70 minutes to make it 4-1, Kingussie looked home and dry. However Kilmallie fought their way back into the game though and goals from Michael Rodger on 82 minutes and John Stewart 3 minutes later set up a tense finish but Kingussie held on to secure another final appearance. Kingussie will meet Fort William in the final after the An Aird men were 3-1 winners over Newtonmore at the Eilan. Newtonmore welcomed Fraser MacKintosh back into their squad last weekend after injury and he scored the only goal of the game when the sides met on league duty at An Aird. The Fort’s Alex Duncan missed this one through suspension as he was sent off last week. James Clark started at full back with the aim of snuffing out the threat of ‘More full forward Danny MacRae. A large crowd gathered to watch a goalless first half although the home side looked the likelier to score. The second half exploded into action when John MacLeod fired a great shot past Michael Ritchie to put Fort William 1-0 ahead. The home side levelled 10 minutes later thanks to a Paul MacArthur shot from distance with Fort keeper Paul MacKay unsighted. The tie remained level until 12 minutes from time when Bryan Simpson beat his marker and blasted the ball into the roof of the net from the tightest of angles. John MacDonald confirmed Fort William’s place in the final when he gave Ritchie no chance with a shot into the top corner of the net to make it 3-1. The Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final takes place at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 18 June 2011 Glasgow Celtic Society Cup - Semi Finals Taynuilt were boosted from their Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup win over Inverness last weekend and they took this confidence into their home semi final meeting with Oban Camanachd. Indeed Taynuilt took the lead after just 6 minutes through David Campbell. The visitors levelled on 19 minutes though when Iain MacMillan made it 1-1. Oban Camanachd manager Diarmid MacMillan had ace marksman Aidan MacIntyre back in his line-up and he put Oban ahead 3 minutes later only for Taynuilt’s Willie Neilson to make it 2-2 just sixty seconds after. Oban Camanachd’s class told in the second half though and Scott MacMillan put them ahead again a couple of minutes after the restart. Aidan MacIntyre put Oban 4-2 up on 55 minutes and Scott MacMillan added his second 5 minutes from time to make it 5-2. Holders Inveraray are out of this year’s competition after they went down 4-1 to Kyles Athletic at the Winterton in what was a repeat of last year’s final. Russell MacKinlay put the home side ahead but Kyles’ Fraser MacDonald made it 1-1 from the penalty spot. Roddy MacDonald put the visitors 2-1 in front whilst Dunkie Kerr grabbed a brace to make it 4-1. Inveraray’s Garry MacPherson and Kyles’ Andrew King were both ordered off by referee Deek Cameron. Kyles Athletic will now play Oban Camanachd in the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final which takes place at the Winterton on Saturday 25 June 2011. Balliemore Cup Quarter Finals Holders Kinlochshiel are out of this year’s competition after going down 3-2 to Caberfeidh at Castle Leod. The sides occupy first and second place in Marine Harvest North Division 1 and ‘Shiel manager Johnston Gill was without Scotland international Finlay MacRae who is on a two week charity trip to Guatemala. However they didn’t let that go against them as John MacRae burst forward from his full centre position to collect a Steven Callander pass and fire his side into a 5 minute lead. Caber’s fought back though and Scotland U21 cap Kevin Bartlett made it 1-1 at the second attempt on 22 minutes. Keith MacRae put ‘Shiel back in front on 53 minutes when he shot low and hard into the net after good link up play between Steven Callander and Fraser MacVicar. Cabers’ keeper Donald Mellis made a great save from Steven Callander to keep his side in the game and John MacRae hit the post from the resultant corner. ‘Shiel were made to pay as Ruaraidh MacLennan benefited when the visiting defence failed to clear their lines and he levelled for a second time on 65 minutes to make it 2-2. The home side had the final word when Martin MacDonald, who only recently suffered a broken finger, got the winner on 75 minutes when he netted after a ‘Shiel defensive clearance had been charged down. The victory will be a perfect tonic for Robbie Taylor’s side who suffered a shock Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup exit at home to Tayforth last weekend. Balliemore Cup specialists Caberfeidh now meet Beauly in the semi finals. 2008 winners Skye Camanachd went down to an 8-0 defeat to Beauly at Braeview Park. There was a 3pm throw up at Spean Bridge where last year’s beaten finalists Lochaber and Lochcarron clashed. Lochaber’s Neil MacDonald remained out with a broken bone in his leg. In the end Lochaber progressed to the next round following a 7-1 win thanks in no small way to a man of the match performance from Ben Delaney who has been in a rich vein of form lately. Delaney gave his side a 3-0 half time lead when he notched a first half hat-trick on 14, 30 and 54 minutes. Scott Patterson ended the tie as a contest with a goal 5 minutes into the second half and Delaney netted his fourth on 54 minutes. Lochcarron’s Daniel MacRae did pull a consolation goal back a couple of minutes later but Shaun Nicolson on 80 minutes and Lachlan Campbell on full time saw the seven goals shared between the Spean Bridge forward line. Scottish Hydro Premier Division There was just one match in shinty’s top division as Glenurquhart played bottom side Glenorchy at Blairbeg. Glenurquhart manager Jim Barr, who was re-elected as a Camanachd Association Director at the recent AGM, knew a win for the Glen would lift them level on points with third place Newtonmore and they took this opportunity. Glenorchy were late in arriving for the game as they were held up in traffic following a serious road accident by near-by Borlum Farm. When news of the accident filtered through, it cast a cloud of sadness over the afternoon’s proceedings. In the end the sides were only separated by a Neale Reid penalty 5 minutes into the second half. Marine Harvest South Division 1 Kilmory went down 2-0 at home to Oban Celtic. Oban Celtic manager Davy Hamilton was without forward Kenny Wotherspoon as he served the second game of a two match ban. David Devine put the home side ahead after just a couple of minutes but Kyles’ Roddy MacColl netted to make it 1-1 on 13 minutes. Kyles suffered a blow on 35 minutes when Sandy MacKenzie was sent off by referee Ronnie Campbell, meaning they were a man short for almost an hour. Lochside regained the lead on 41 minutes through Malcolm Clark but Kyles again fought back and a goal from Innes MacDonald on 44 minutes made it 2-2 at the break. It looked as if eleven man Kyles had geld out for a share of the points when up popped Daniel MacKinnon with a last gasp strike to give Lochside Rovers the win. They now sit third in the table, level on points with second place Glasgow Mid Argyll. Marine Harvest North Division 2 League leaders Glengarry lost 3-2 to reigning champions Glenurquhart for the second consecutive Saturday. Glenurquhart’s Calum Miller scored his second on 82 minutes and this proved to be the winning goal. Garry’s defeat allowed Newtonmore the chance to return to the top of the table and they took it with a 3-1 win over third place Fort William at An Aird. Chris Sellar scored twice for the visitors whilst Ross Aitken got the other. Jack Fraser scored for Fort William. Mark Grant of Fort William and Brett Munro of Newtonmore were sent off by referee Robert Morrison. Third place Fort William, with full forward Jack Fraser starting to regularly find the net, and second place Newtonmore clash in what should be an entertaining game at An Aird. Bottom side Kilmallie went down to a narrow 4-3 defeat to third bottom Kinlochshiel at the Canal Parks. Both sides have put in some good performances this season without getting much reward and it was the home side who took the lead after 18 minutes through Seb MacMillan. However Duncan DA MacRae levelled for ‘Shiel on 23 minutes and Ross Fraser put the visitors in front on 35 minutes. Kilmallie’s Robbie MacFadyen squared the game when he fired past ‘Shiel keeper Iain Cameron to make it 2-2 a couple of minutes into the second half. Brian MacKay put Kilmallie ahead with a strike 10 minutes into the second half only for Ross Fraser to square the match again with his second goal on 59 minutes. The winner came 11 minutes from time when ‘Shiel’s Stuart MacRae rifled home to put his side 4-3 in front and they held this lead for the remainder of the game. The 12 noon throw up between Inveraray and Col Glen was also postponed as the Winterton was unplayable. Marine Harvest North Division 3 There was an historic match at Shawbost as Lewis Camanachd played their first home match against Lochbroom. Defender Eoghan Stewart turned out for Lewis despite a rib injury whilst Paul Duke took the field after celebrating the birth of his son in Glasgow during the week. Sandy Urquhart put Lochbroom ahead after 15 minutes and Josh Talbot put the visitors 2-0 in front with a strike 5 minutes later. Lewis’ Scott Murray raised a cheer from the home support when he pulled a goal back on 25 minutes but Sandy Urquhart scored his second on the half hour mark to make it 3-1. Goals from Josh Talbot on 34 minutes and Jamie MacFadyen 5 minutes later gave Lochbroom a 5-1 advantage at the break. Second half goals from Steven Bellshaw after 65 minutes and Jamie MacFadyen’s second 5 minutes later rounded off a good 7-1 win for Lochbroom.
