Kinlochshiel 3 Skye Camanachd 0. | |
14 March 2011 The Skye second team went down to a 3-0 defeat to Kinlochshiel at Kirkton in Marine Harvest North Division 2 on Saturday 12 March 2011. Skye Camanachd boss Davie MacVicar made 5 changes from the squad which beat Kilmallie the previous weekend. Teenagers Shaun Hedley, Neil MacVicar, Jordan Murchison and Iain Morrison as well as Darryl Macintosh all came into the squad. Calum Gibb, Mark Mortimer, Iain MacPherson and the management duo of Davie MacVicar and Murdo Morrison were the players to miss out. Kinlochshiel were also able to strengthen by including three first team regulars; buckshee back Mark MacDonald and strikers Neil Fraser and John MacRae. Kinlochshiel got off to the best possible start when they took the lead within 20 seconds of the start. Shiel full centre Colin MacDiarmid won the throw up and launched the ball forward. Skye full back David Grant appeared to have the ball under control. However Shiel full forward Neil Fraser seemed to inadvertently trip Grant which left the defender on the turf and gave Fraser a clear run at goal and he confidently dispatched the ball into the back of the net. Skye quickly responded to this early set-back and Iain Morrison saw a shot flash across goal on 6 minutes. Just 3 minutes later, Skye’s Jordan Murchison was afforded time to shoot but his effort rose just over the bar. Skye’s keeper John MacLeod was called into action on 12 minutes when he blocked a Duncan MacRae shot with his feet and cleared the ball for a corner. Kinlochshiel went 2-0 ahead on 18 minutes in what was another unfortunate set of circumstances for Skye. Shiel played the ball into the danger area to Neil Fraser but Skye keeper John MacLeod got there first. MacLeod volleyed the ball clear but it spun off Fraser’s back and looped towards the Skye net. MacLeod dashed back but he was unable to stop the ball crossing the line. Worse was to follow for the Islanders on 27 minutes. The Skye defence scrambled to clear a Shiel attack and keeper MacLeod attempted a clearance which hit a Skye defender on the heel. The ball diverted goalwards and John MacRae followed it in to ensure it crossed the line. Skye could scarcely believe their misfortune. A great shot from John MacRae almost made it 4-0 a couple of minutes later as Skye seemed deflated. Referee John Sloggie was forced to intervene in a scuffle between Skye defender Shaun Hedley and Kinlochshiel forward Duncan MacRae on 41 minutes. Hedley received a warning for his part whilst MacRae was yellow carded. Skye were awarded a free hit for a shove on Allan MacKinnon on 50 minutes. The ball was then played forward to Jordan Murchison but home keeper Iain Cameron raced from his goal to clear the danger. Skye substitute Iain MacLellan burst down the right wing on 55 minutes. He crashed a terrific shot goalwards but Cameron made a fantastic save above his head. The rebound fell for Allan MacKinnon but he put the ball over the bar. Kinlochshiel’s Mark MacDonald also found his way into referee John Sloggie’s book on 62 minutes for one altercation too many. The remainder of the game was played out in extremely wintery conditions and the players, officials and supporters deserve credit for seeing it through to the end. The last real chance fell Skye’s way. Jordan Murchison won a corner on the left and the ball was played across goal to Neil John Campbell, who had been pushed into the attack following Scott MacLeod’s introduction, and he hit a great shot which went just over the bar. It was a game which left Skye wondering how they ended up on the end of a 3-0 defeat but Kinlochshiel are to be credit for taking the chances presented to them. Skye must now pick themselves up as they prepare for a tough league meeting with Fort William at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree next weekend.
