Memory Lane – Season 1989 / 90 – Part 22. | |
03 December 2010 North Division 1 Skye Camanachd 2 Caberfeidh 0 Skye Camanachd secured two more points towards their title push with a stuffy 2-0 win over fourth place Caberfeidh on a heavy King George V pitch. Caberfeidh gave a good account of themselves, especially in the first half. However for all their possession, they rarely threatened in front of the Skye goal. The closest Cabers came in the first period was a couple of shots on goal from full forward Robbie Taylor which were competently dealt with by Skye keeper John “Bodach” MacKenzie. The Skye forwards also enjoyed plenty possession but they were became increasingly frustrated by their lack of efforts on goal. When their shots did find the target, they found Cabers’ keeper Michael Bartlett in excellent form. The Islanders began the second half obviously fired-up by a half time team talk from manager Ross Cowie and they went on to enjoy their best period of the game. Skye eventually made the break-through on the hour mark. The goal was a fantastic individual effort from Willie MacKinnon who was excellent throughout the game. MacKinnon burst forward, beating his marker on the wing before cutting in on goal. He then dribbled the ball past keeper Bartlett before tucking it into the net. Skye pressed for a second goal but they found visiting keeper Bartlett in inspirational form. He made a series of great saves but one particularly impressive stop from a 20 yard Peter Gordon drive drew gasps from the crowd. It took Skye until 5 minutes from time before they secured the points through a typical John MacRae effort. The powerful forward beat his marker before showing good close control as he avoided a couple of challenges before rolling the ball into the net. The Skye defence deserves special mention having only lost 10 goals in their 8 league games and 4 of these were in the defeat away to league leaders Kingussie. Full back Duncan MacDougall along with wing backs Ewen MacKinnon and Donnie “Digg” MacDonald and buckshee back Willie MacRae were proving to be a formidable barrier for opposing teams. |
