Memory Lane – Season 1989 / 90 – Part 21. | |
02 December 2010 Skye Camanachd’s terrific start to the season did not go unnoticed as they were named the Marine Harvest Team of the Month for December 1989. This was the first time that Skye Camanachd had won this award which recognised the serious challenge that the Islanders posed to Kingussie’s dominance in the league. Skye were in second place in North Division 1 – hot on Kingussie’s tails and with everything to play for. Skye also had a MacTavish Cup semi final to look forward to against Strathglass with Kingussie awaiting the winners in the final. Skye Camanachd first team manager Ross Cowie put his side’s impressive first half of the season down to the attitude of the players. Cowie said, “The players are showing their commitment by training hard and the club’s “no train, no play” policy is showing signs of really paying off.” However speaking in the West Highland Free Press, Cowie also noted a word of caution saying, “North teams have often fallen into the trap of just wanting to beat Kingussie but we have to remember that we have to beat the other teams as well.” The Skye Camanachd second team also made a great start to the 1989 / 90 season and they sat in second place in North Division 3 – also behind Kingussie. Skye Camanachd Chairman Kenny MacKay and first team manager Ross Cowie were presented with the award and a £100 cheque by Camanachd Association stalwart and Fixtures Secretary John Willie Campbell. |
